I'm a total newb working with amps, especially tube amps. Is this something I should try to restore on my own? Or should I seek out professional help? Is it even worth it considering it looks pretty shabby? I'd just love to hear what the original electronics sound like, I believe this is from '68? I just don't really know where to start with something like this....

no never work on an old amp...just send them to me ...i collect them :D

I wish you were in NY, Arjay. I have a feeling this will run me more in the long run than if I purchased an already-restore amp. The truth is, it will probably sit in my basement for many more years before I can put any money into it.

As much as you might not be able to trust the posted tube chart, I'll have to disagree with a post or two and say,"Yes, it could be an AB763 chassis." I just serviced a Super for a friend and found the same thing...silverface with aluminum trim grill...and, once opened up, it was indeed an AB763 circuit....sweet!

THe not so sweet??

1 - all the caps needed replaced...check
2 - sooo many ground issues do to a lack of good solder, oxidation, etc. I fixed & fixed and finally gave in and created a star ground system from scratch with some bare 14 gauge copper...hum gone!
3 - the controls were salvaged...deOxit fixed some of that issue.

After several hours of that, I performed some reversible mods...12au7 swap for the 12AX7 in the reverb drive...wider range. Sub'd a 12ax7 for the phase inverter...amp got REALLY chimey!!! Simply swap back to reverse it.

You wanna bet the ranch on a tube chart, be my guest.

But I've seen documentable Super Reverbs (and other models) from 1970 that had that same AB763 chart glued to the inside of the cabinet. And there's simply no way an amp from that production year is an AB763.

Not on a chart, but I did service on a '69 Silverface with an AB763 in it...component-verified...it happens...

I have refurbed a couple of Bantam Bass Amps from 69 and too be honest, your amp really only needs speakers...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1969-al ... 2a294c4f4a
And some new grill cloth, a new power cord and a real thorough cleaning to get it up and running. Then a short trip to an amp tech for a good check, some new tubes and you got a damn fine amp for use or to sell...and it is always easier to sell a refurbed amp

Simply food for thought. You can always make it a long term project, pick up parts as they come along and do the refurb as you go.

FWIW

Many of my restorations were performed in such a fashion. It merely takes equal measures of patience, perserverance, and discipline.

My silverface auper was about a three year project and i still have some work to do. It works really well now so i am mostly down to cosmetics. Doesn't need to be a weekend project unless she who must be obeyed says so

You know, that is only SF drip edge amp I've seen (in the last 25 years) --- where someone actually painted the drip-edge black. The drip-edge on SF is one of the best qualities of this era Fender (IMHO). :D

I never tire of seeing it.
