I bought a 1975 Fender Champ for $320 plus $40 shipping, so $360 in all... Did I make a bad deal? The amp is in used condition, looks like its been played, and appears original besides the speaker. I wish I came here before buying, but the fact that it's PTP wiring and vintage made me pull the trigger. Some things bother me like the MDF Cabinet but I think I'll get over that. Any thoughts??

One of the better upgrade is replacing the OEM speaker. I like Weber 8-inch 8F150. It does fit, without removing the chassis. You just need to remove the tubes. And carefully place the speaker onto the screw studs, to avoid damaging the speaker cone.

Be sure to specify a 4-ohm impedance if you decide on that Weber 8F150 or any other replacement speaker for that matter.

Photos would help determine if the price you paid is fair. If its clean and unmolested, the price is about right. Missing the OEM speaker does reduce the value.

In the long run - do YOU like it? If so, then you're golden. :D

Trust me......there is nothing sonically remarkable about the OEM Oxford speaker.

 Yeah... I realize that.....

I was thinking more how the collector market looks at the OEM speaker not being present when it comes to determining a value/price on a vintage amp.

Seems clean, original, and unmolested.

I don't think you did badly for $360.

Rawk on!

Amazing good deals on these still popular amps are still around. One hint. Try not the turn the amp on and crank it up right out of the UPS box. :)

The cap cans on these units are known for sudden failure if the amp's been sitting around and the caps have lost their form. I'd recommend a Variac to reform the caps. Or the famous light-bulb triick. Once re-formed, these old time Mallory and Sprague cans often last another 10-15 years of hard use.

This is an old trick, well-known by vintage radio collectors and Ham radio freaks. You can use the tubes that came with the amp, as the 5Y3GT is a direct-heated rectifier.

Good luck with the new amp!

+1

There's an average-condition '71 Champ on my local C/L that can prolly be had for $175 right now.

Glad I read this cause I wouldn't have thought twice about cranking it. I'm def gonna look into the light bulb trick..

I've got a 1973 Champ and that stock Oxford speaker is garbage. I put a Weber 8A125 in mine and it's fantastic!

If you're concerned about preserving "OEM value" then just put the original speaker safely away in a box. You can always throw it back in if you decide to sell the amp down the road.

That's how I treat the issue.

Exactly.

My SF Vibro Champ had a period correct Oxford, but not original. I put a Weber Vintage Series 8F125-0 it. Totally love this driver. Sold the Oxford to someone interested in having an OEM back-up for their SF Champ. A collector might not like the missing OEM speaker, but I think a player will love the crunchy Weber.

I guess the real question might be...... does the OEM speaker really mean that much in the silverface student models - regardless of what we all believe or have been told? :D
