Hi,

While waiting for my Showman Reverb amp to get repaired I decided to drag out my Shure Vocal Master VA 300 PA amplifier.

It has been sitting for about 30 years. I cleaned it up and it fired right up. My question is many of the volume, treble, bass, and other switches make scratching noises when I move them.
Just wanted to make sure that DeoxIT/DeoxIT Gold is the right contact cleaner to use for these pots:

Or, should I use something else.

Thanks

Jerry

Jerry...Yep, that is the stuff! Although that price seems high, but I've had my can for quite sometime!

Spray away.

Tony

I use Deoxit D5 . This is very good.

But any high quality contact cleaner with lubricant will do the job . Low quality ( price to low ) can't clean contacts/ pots .

Are you able to open cabinet to spray in pot small hole ?

Well, I hadn't thought about opening the cabinet to spray the pots. I thought you just spray down the shafts of the volume, tone knobs, etc.

I can open the cabinet.

So am I looking for a little hole or something on the back of each pot? How about the rocker switches, it has eleven. There are 15 volume and tone knobs.

Rocker switch ; you can spray from the outside of the amp .

Volume pot ; from the front , around the shaft ! Sometimes it is work if you are very lucky . Most of the time you need to go inside the cab . There are one hole on the back of each pot and where are the 3 lugs. Spray there.

It is very important that you must turn pot shaft at LEAST ten full turn after spray . To clean it all the way

I owned one of those in the 70's too. Do you still have the columns?
It did the job for us for years and was seriously reliable, but those columns were really tall and hard to transport. They just fit in my 75 Chevy Vega Hatchback  the Deoxit will do the job, but as others stated, don't get it from Radio Shack.

63supro,

Unfortunately, I only have one of the speaker columns left. It is almost 63" tall :)

Several years ago, someone broke into my garage and stole one of the columns and a socket set of Craftsman tools. I was lucky that they only took those two items. The other column was in the garage along with two custom speaker cabinets I built and my Showman Reverb Amp and speaker cabinet. Guess the bad guy(s) couldn't see (can only turn on my garage lights from inside the house). There were pry marks on the door to my kitchen from the garage and a couple of windows at the back of the house. Fortunately, they didn't get in the house.

God help anyone who tries to get in my house if I'm home. I believe in the 2nd Amendment. :)

I would like to replace that speaker column but they are hard to find.

That sucks! I had a 66 Vibrolux Reverb stolen and twenty years later it still stings. The Vocalmaster really wasn't a bad PA at all at the time. The new systems are so compact. We rehearsed with that PA three nights a week and gigged with it the other four. Really reliable.

Yes, it was a reliable PA. Used in my band the last four years that I was playing. I was rough moving all that heavy stuff around, but of course, I was a LOT younger then. :)

Well guys, the DeoxIT Gold really worked good !

As I sprayed each switch and pot I could immediately feel it turn easier as I turned them back and forth.

Now all switches, volume, and tone knobs are quiet as a mouse. 8)

Tony,

Actually, the only holes in the pots were where the shaft of the knob protruded out a little bit (I guess that's what you're talking about). Anyway, sprayed in there and turned knobs back and forth about 10 to 15 time. I could feel them loosing up. All the rocker switches were accessible from the back also.

I get no noise at all from any of the switches and knobs.
