Does anyone know when Fender shifted production away from finger jointed pine cabinets? Even with all the books on Fender Amps I have, I can't find any reference to when this might have transpired.

I was discussing this with a friend and neither one of us could find a specific reference for the change over.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

1970 was the final year for finger-joined cabinetry.

I kind of thought it happened in the 70's, but did not realise it was so early on. Is this stated somewhere or info from your own extensive experience?

So they went back to this type of construction for the Rivera Era Amps then, at least according to the ads of the time. They were pine cabs with lock joined, but appeared to be a bit different design on the join'd area, they looked almost triangular in shape.

I wanna say I read about it in the soul of tone. Something about how it was faster and cheaper to change it to a slot joint (not sure of the exact name). I don't have the book with me so i'm not sure of the page number. He was commenting on how the cabinets of the larger combo amps tended to fall apart because this joint wasn't as strong.

They (CBS) went to "lap joints" which aren't worth a crap! They then started cutting a groove in the sides/top/bottom and slid the speaker baffle in to this "dado" with glue. This strengthened the sloppy lap joints but made baffle replacement nearly impossible to replace.

Trust me, I have a 1972 VT-15 cab that doesn't leave the house because of that kind of cost cutting. Arjay has seen the photos. Even though I have replaced the baffle using the old method of using cleats, I don't trust the lap joints.

Still looks awesome though. :D
Grill cloth on lower right isn't torn, that's a weird digital artifact.
