I had a couple laying around
A jensen wannabe Mod 50 and an old made in chicago Bell & Howell speaker
Not sure what will ultimately end up in there.
here is a picture of that speaker from the Bell & howell cab

Chris, interesting speaker. I haven't seen an "077" manufacturer EIA code. Maybe, it's a misprinted Eminence EIA of "067." It looks kinda like a 1980-90s Eminence.

That would be interesting. You have any other photos or number markings on the speaker?

Thanks!

Several people have mentioned buying from a small company in Chicago called Wilder
They made their own speakers and amps from the 50's to the early 70's if my memory serves me.
And made speakers for a few other companies like Bell & Howell

Chris, never heard of Wilder of Chicago. FWIW, the EIA I found for this company is "449."

How is the tone?

Actually very nice !
Warm without covering the highs, well balanced
Can't say the same for the Mod 50 Jensen wannabe , kinda shrill sounding, not much bottom
I played the Bell & Howell alone and it sounded great !

I just bought this to replace the Italian Jensen Mod 50
https://reverb.com/item/977390-carvin-b ... hm-speaker

I've had these Emi made Carvins before and really liked them alot !
You just have to be careful since Carvin sold an 80 watt chinese version of their British speaker after these with a very similar looking decal, they are NOT good !
Can't wait to hear it mixed with the Wilder

Just so folks following this thread have an update on the speaker cab
Removing the MOD 50 and installing the Eminence made 100 watt Carvin (British) speaker made a 100% positive change in the tone of this rig, the Jensen wannabe was shrill and had no bottom.

Speakers do matter folks ! 8)

Thanks!

I have yet to find a wattage listed for this speaker, it has a big voice coil and decent magnet
If I had to guess by looking at it i would say that 50 watts has to be close.

Amazing how different the tone is in a 50 watt bassman with a 2X12 and my 74 Super reverb with the alnico CTS 10's

Also the bassman head has all of its piggyback parts and so my new mystery cab needs the threaded bolts and thumb screws, at around volume 3 the head starts walking on its own

Sealed cabs versus open back ---> big difference in bass response. Sealed tends to be punchier, fuller tone. The four 10 inchers in an open back ---> more crazy harmonic interactions. That is my initial summary of the two.

Is that what you hear? Thanks!

Exactly how I would describe it
The closed back 2x12 is very punchy , another way to say it is a lot of authority in the notes !

Does not however take anything away from the super ! which has more power than I'll ever need

Something we rarely check was an issue with a tube amp on my bench.
I checked my speaker with my meter to make sure it was roughly 8 ohms using the cord and plug connecting the tip to positive and holding the neg lead on the shaft of the plug and it read like 13.5 ohms ???
I pulled the cable and plug off the speaker and it read a perfectly reasonable 6.5 ohms across the speaker connections.
As it turned out the old cable on the positive tip to the positive connector also read over 6 ohms

Moral of the story:
Check them speaker cables !

And it's been a long while since i posted on this monster thread so........ Howdy everyone 8)

Chris, very good point! I've seen old speaker and power cables that had blue tinged copper strands which is oxidized copper = very high resistance.

I usually change ALL power and speaker cables, when I see this.

Yep Steve that's what it looked like with the exception of having push on connectors
over 6 ohms on the positive side, the negative side showed .02 ohms

Just another thing to inspect on older amps when getting them back in shape.

Had i not left the cable on before checking the speaker I might not have known I was running over 13 ohms without a load and so most likely 16 or more ohms live.
