The overall changes are positive, I felt like I had lost some of the range when i went to the piggyback cab from the two 1x12 open backs, opening the back up further definately made a big difference.
It has made me into a firm believer in open back cabs for guitar.
Nikola I would say it was about 40% removed from the back, If your worried about vintage integrity then as others have suggested get yourself a sheet of plywood and make a new back with an opening and save the original in case you want to sell later, my back had already been hacked so............
I otherwise wouldn't have done it myself, glad I did, the sound improvement is HUGE !
Like taking a blanket off the amp or pulling the baffles out of a Harley

A/B with the new Bassman 10 in my other thread and its obvious what a difference a sealed back cab makes on overall sound.

That 2 x 12 inch sealed cab that I had made, seems very efficient. Crank the Bassman to "4" and it is LOUD. Would be interesting to open the back and see if that allows you to turn the amp up a bit more --- to get into OD.

A thought... :D

I would have to say yes, I think the closed back is certainly louder (from the front side) than an open back and so opening up the back should give you a bit more travel from your volume pot.

Its all based on my ears and not a decibel meter so...................

Just wanted to share the latest on the 68/69 bassman
I almost sold it, went down plugged in and changed my mind, Fickle old man LOL !!!
Thought the Bassman 10 was enough for me, well it is sweet, but that massive iron OT on the 69 has a bit mopre authority in the notes.

Pulled the Chassis on the 69 to check bias and took a few shots

Chris, I like those Jupiter yellow caps, too. Tone is similar to the Blue Molded. IMHO.

I would be difficult to give up on that drip edge Bassman. A great amp, classic Fender tone.

Exactly why it will be fought over in my will

I'm restless when it comes to gear , always looking for a project, you guys turned me into a circuit junkie !
Nothing beats finding a well worn Fender and making it sparkle all over again
The silverface stuff is now nearly 50 years old and still pumping out sweet tone (when properly cared for) and it was the ugly step child so......
That says a lot for the guys and gals who made this stuff back in the day.

And what seams to be a worn out piece of gear many times isn't and just needs a little minor surgery to get it back up and singing like new, to me that holds a lot of promise for future musicians.

Here is hoping some hold out for tone and don't get the digital dumb down 8)

Chris, three killer words (for many reasons )... "Blonde Era Bassman." 6G6-A or -B head unit.

You didn't hear this suggestion from me.

I would love to mod the Bassman 10 normal channel, now that the Studio channel is modded, who cares.

Gut that thing and start over

Well I picked this weird one up today
Most date codes are 1967 and a few 1968, it has drip edge trim
However the face plate and logo are mid to late 70's

Who would put a 74 or later faceplate on a real 68 ??????

Chassis looks early 1968. Two prong accessory outlet. Date stamps on chassis and the dates on the iron.

I guess is re-grilled the cab. Used an available face plate (later silverface era) & logo. Are the tubes vintage US makes?
