Gottcha Chris ! My bad, thought your kids were younger. Shoot me an Email when you get your agenda open for a jam slot. Hey, just wondering about your experience with the Mustang ? My background was back in the mid '60's. To be honest, I found them to be kind of shallow sounding. But I did have a friend, that really made it chime, through a Deluxe Reverb. He could really cover some of the Byrds stuff!!! I wasn't in that band. But the other guitar player used a Gretsch(Country Gentleman) through a Band Master. Those guys, along with their vocals, made a glorious sound!!! What a combination!!!! Art

The pickups are only around 5.5K so its a fairly low output, however That leads to a unique single coil sound that sounds pretty cool.
I'm impressed with the variety of tones available with the slider switches !
The neck is way different than any strat I've ever played.

Been moving and just flat out busy !!!!
Yesterday a buddy called to ask if I wanted a silverface Bassman head
He had no use and knew I liked them.
Here we go again !!!!

power tranny is 1967 the others are 1968
With the exception of a three prong power cord (very well done) it has an untouched circuit.
Including original electrolytic caps
And a back panel !!!!!!
This is the first fender head in a long time that I got the back panel with the amp !

Didn't want you all to think I died or something, I just bought a house built in 1900 and well I've been a busy guy, painting, plumbing etc......

I sold off almost all of my gear to pay cash for our new house and just started rebuilding my music room.
By God's great blessings the new house had a 19.5 X 19.5' addition on the back and so i still have my man cave Jamm'n spot !

The 59 Bassman LTD (recent pawn shop find) has a Mullardd GZ34, a nice JAN 12AY7 (thanks Steve) ! and a nice RCA 7025, the original GT 6L6GE are still in it and biased correctly, The amp sounds very nice ! as good as my two Clark Piedmonts I've had !!
Hey it's an American Made Fender and I got it for less than half the price of a new one.

Bassman amps Rule Dude 8)

20K plus readers of this thread !
Wow !!!
Sure hope it helps a ton of people to learn how to blackface, do a safe filter Capacitor change, restore some tolex etc........

The guys here and I sure went through a lot of great discussions about Fender Tube Amplifiers.

Long live the Bassman Head Thread !!!!

To keep you up to date I just finished replacing Screen resistors on a newer model DRRI and saved it from being tossed in a dump, again with help from this forum and the Telecaster forum. I was able to save it with an hour of bench time and very little cost !

This is if anything a tribute to the very kind folks that share their knowledge !!!! 8)

Here she is a perfect 67 drip edge black line Bassman and a re-purposed stage 160 that is now my 2x12 for the bassman.
It came with a nice pair of RCA 6L6GC and some RCA 7025 pre amp tubes
Electrolytic caps are allready done and its quiet as a church mouse !
Not sure why, but it came with the original two prong ungrounded power cord, seems kinda strange to get under the hood and not install a grounded cord, but hey its a 15 minute job !

Just cant stay away from that bassman sound !

Chris,

I have a '68 dripedge to R&R in a week or two. Supposed stock AC568 circuit. Gonna revert it to the AA165. This is what you did to your Bassman, correct?

Photos to follow. :D   :D

Awesome Beemer ! Good to hear from you !
This 67 came already "blackfaced"
From what I remember The 69 I had had the big sandbox resistors attached to pin 8 of the power tubes and that ridiculous super thin (Garbage) wire and all of the amps 67 and earlier still has cloth covered wire.

Here is a long shot of the circuit, I'll take more when I replace the power cord with a grounded version.

Sorry for the confusion, I've been calling this new head a 68, its a 1967 and so Beemer you were right on as usual, it was 68 that the big changes started in the circuit.
67 was the year of transition from Blackface to Silver and the circuit was pretty much the same as a 66.

Don't have any idea why I was stuck on 68 ??? maybe following the Fender Reissue SF's come to think of it they should have reissued the 67

Chris,

Just to re-cap. The amp was originally a AC568 Bassman circuit. Then, reverted to a AA864 or an AA165?

Thanks!

AA864 is the schematic I have blown up Xtra Large in my repair bench area and the one I follow when I upgrade SF Bassman Heads

Chris,

The AA864 IS the Bassman circuit to shoot for. Very close topology and feedback parameters to the Fender AB763 in other amps.

I remember that changing the crazy SF Bassman global feedback circuit to the BF GNFB caused a phase inversion in the signal, correct? That you needed to switch the primary leads off the output tranny. Right?
