I decided to let Mr Clark have a look at it, too much value for me to be in there possible causing more harm than good !

Hopefully he will treat me right being that its his creation.

He said there were updates to the piedmont he would do (safety stuff)

We shall see

Good choice.

Chris,

Be interesting what are the "updates for safety" features. Tube amps been around for a long time. You'd think just about every safety feaure has been explored. Just a thought... :)

My bet is that plastic bias micro-pot has been changed out.

Here is a real lesson learned !
Fedex returned my amp to my house the day it was to arrive at Clark Amplification.
The plastic pouch with delivery info had been ripped off the box in route.
Thankfully inside I had a list for Mr. Clark and my return info with address and phone.

The clark may have been lost forever without that slip inside !

The new pouch on the outside had every edge taped down with extra packing tape !!!

Man I sure miss DHL !!!!
Seriously !!! They never broke a single thing for me and where on time and priced right too !
Fedex has been a little better.

If you ship Big Brown Truck, you might want to hold a prayer vigil till it gets there !
The broke my well packaged stuff and said it was my fault twice, Have yet to go back !

After a long vacation I pulled out the 67 Bassman and 2x12 and remembered just how sweet that amp is !!!

I do believe I'm gonna get some more PIO caps and spend some serious time with this amp.
The C-rex speakers are getting nicely broken in and sounding better all the time !!!

I personally love the BF and early Silverface Bassmans !
I do enjoy a tube rectified amp, however with a 5AR4 GZ34 its darn near hard to tell the difference.

The 5Y3 Champs and the 5U4GB stuff has way more sag than a GZ34 so.......
I did go ahead and order a Reverb pedal to stick in front of it, I think its the Boss FRV-1
I have read a few good reviews, we shall see !

Follow up on the Piedmont deal

Got an e-mail from Mr Clark Yesterday
Diagnoses all pio caps where leaking DC (except the two I just replaced)
The standby was shorted to ground due to excess voltage
Bias micro pot was swapped out for a standard Fender style out the bottom of the chassis.

430 later (still gasping and short of breath over that one )
Hopefully it will be on the way
He hasn't responded back to me since I asked for an itemized receipt
Maybe he used Gold foil caps instead of copper foil ?????

Chris, I was under the impression that the labor was going to be pro-bono!! No wonder he wanted to get his hands on the amp!!! Just wandering if Mr Clark, talked to you following the diagnosis-preceeding component replacement? Excessive voltage on the switch? Hmmmm!!! Art

Well !
What can I say, I wanted it done right and thought the builder would take some pride in his work and Do it very well.
Hopefully it is all I could ever want in a Bassman clone and then some.

The guy who built that JTM45 was a real pleasure to talk to and showed interest in his creation long after it had been out of his hands.
Kinda what I expected from Mr. Clark
Instead I get unanswered e-mails and a HUGE !!! bill for replacing a handful of caps and a switch.

The only way for the standby switch to short to ground would be if the cap attached to it (assuming your amp is an accurate clone) shorted to ground.

So the question is, why would the cap short to ground?

"Excess voltage" could come only from a faulty rectifier tube or faulty power transformer.

So the next question is, which component failed?

The final question you should be asking is, what caused the failure?

Actually, here is the last question: What happened to your warranty?

"Clark Amplification 10 Year Warranty

Clark Amplification warranties all it's amplifiers for a period of ten years. Parts and labor are covered with the following exceptions; abuse, misuse, and normal wear and tear. Shipping to and from Clark Amplification is the responsibility of the owner. Tubes, speakers, input jacks, and reverb spring pans are covered for a period of thirty days. Repairs and / or modifications made by anyone other than Clark Amplification voids this warranty. The warranty follows the amplifier and there is no need to notify Clark Amplification of transfer of ownership."

The amp was built in 2001
Twelve years ago

Pretty sure my rectifier tube died
