What wattage iron do you use to remove the tabs on those cap cans ?
I have a 45 and its not hot enough.

I might want to change that eventually, again its pretty quiet right now.

Chris,

45-wattts should be fine for the wires. To get the can off the chassis, I use a Dremel and grind down at the corner of the can's tangs and the chassis.

Then, use a Weller W100P (100-watt) iron with a flat tip & good flux to solder the new can's tangs onto the chassis. You should have a really good solder point, as any poor soldering onto the chassis = hum. This includes all grounding points directly onto the metal.

HTH. Good luck!

Thought I better post a picture of that cab I finished for our fender friends
Turned out pretty cool.

As per Arjay's suggestions I put a partial back on it for better Bass, it helped, still needs a good 4 ohm 10" speaker !
The wife did an excellent job decorating it !
She put some cool pipping between the wood panel and the baffle since I took these pictures too.

Hey guys
The 67 Bassman has developed a new issue, since it only happens at start up I thought I would run it by you before I start replacing stuff.

When you first fire up the amp it has a lot of crackle rushing wind noise then it dies down and the noise level gets low enough to use the amp, with the occasional crackle.

If I had to guess I would say its a resistor thats giving up the ghost, but again it only does it at take off, then again when you put the amp on standby (shut down) you get a similar but not as loud sound ?
Faulty Standby switch ???
Does that help pinpoint a possible are to look ?
Thanks

Chris, try this first. Take out each tube, straighten the pins of the 9-pin minis and clean them with a light crocus cloth. Or even a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Then, apply some Dexoit D5 or GN5.

Place a dab of same De-Oxit into each pin socket holder. Now, work the tubes into the sockets. Maybe, remove and insert them two or three times. Straight up-&-down. NO TILTING! To kinda "lap" them into the sockets. Like you do with engine valves.

See if that doesn't help the inital fire-up issue.

You can also use some contact cleaner (like De-Oxit fader Lube) on the Standby and Power switches.

Chris, your tech skills are way beyond mine, so no help for you with the '67, but I am totally digging the cab you did up. Tres Cool and a fine job.

Hey if it were not for the wife I wouldn't be here

Really, she is the one who got me back to playing after about ten years completely away from the guitar, in 2003 she bought me a hwy-1 Strat and restarted my obsession with all things blues and guitar, took me to see BB King two years in a row at my B-day time and I've been playing since.

I have a rare gem !!!!
If I see gear I'm digg'n and mention it to her she says "hey you have a job"
SWEET !!!!!

I pulled the chassis on the 67 Bassman today
Sprayed the standby switch, pulled all of the tubes and sprayed them (deoxit with lube on the switch, without lube of the pins).
I then reinserted the tubes a few times to let the cleaner get into the tube socket.
Re installed the chassis and all traces of noise were gone !

Thanks Steve for the reminder ! it really helped a lot !!!

PS edited to add
I checked the bias while I had the chassis out and it was dead on at 35.8 per tube
Nice edging towards the top end, sounds excellent !

As it turns out it looks like the standby switch is gonna need to be replaced.
Spray it and it gets quiet for a day, the next day its making noises again. :(

Hey ya can't win em all !

Nice to see fender is back in the parts business again !!!
Nice new site guys !!!

Chris, if you change out the SBS, add some snubber caps (like what Bluesky did with his Trainwreck DIY). This will extend the life of the switch and reduce noise.

BTW... be interested on how the 6072A turn out.

Thanks!

I'll pop those 12AY7's in this morning and let ya know how they sound.
Thanks again !

So adding a cap to ground off of the Standby will add longevity to the switch ?
I thought the only use for those caps off the switches were to add "safety" ?
So they are actually just a buffer against the hard rush or current ?
and the three prong cord wont be affected (safety) in any way ???

Interesting !
