This may be an answer to why the JJ's sounded bad also.
Whwn I pulled the jj's and installed the Tung-Sol RI's the meter showed the TS were pulling 65ma per tube at the setting I had the jj's pulling 35ma.

Thats a huge difference in draw ! I have the tung-sol running at 34 to 35 ma using my bias probe and they sound full and warm and break up nicely at about 5 on the volume dial.

Chris,

Those JJ's are only at 50% output. Perfect reason why you need to test output tubes in amp conditions. My bet, is that the JJ's test "fine" in a tube tester. But, can only pull 50% of the needed current, in an amp.

They will make nice paperweights or XMAS tree ornanments.

Yep !
Musta been bad from the time I got them
Sounded sterile as all get out, I had some EH 6V6GT's that did the very same thing.

So is there a tube tester outside of an amp that will do high voltage testing ?
and will i need a second mortgage ???

Chris,

Glad you finally got those thumbscrews. Now you aren't playing to your ankles.

Yep
Mr Clark told me it was a very early Reverb & Attenuator for him
Build date was 2001
Loaded with Weber P10R speakers
Sure does sound nice !
Still getting used to the three knob reverb, more tone tweaking than I'm used to.
I had a Piedmont like this before, sure missed those piano lows and sweet highs !
Sure I would rather have a real 59 Fender but.......I've seen prices

Chris,

Can you descrive the tone of the 5881 powered Bassman clone versus your SF Bassman? Guess you may need some more time to break in the tweed.

The tweed is used a 2001 model and well
Broken in.
Extremely warm without being too dark
The p10r speakers are sweet
Overall the major difference is warm and
Earlier breakup in a very nice way !

Both of the Silverface Bassman heads have more Power than the Clark, the notes are a bit harder ? if thats a proper way to describe it.
The clark also has reverb that is pretty cool with the Tweed circuit and a little goes a long way !
I have yet to try the attenuator and honestly see no need for it.
Also the Clark has in my opinion the advantage of that Mullard GZ34 and a 12AY7 in v-1 that shapes the sound in a very different direction than the Bassman heads.
Later today i plan to hook up my ABY box and see what they sound like together, I'm betting on some serious stereo sounds ! 8)

Blues...I would agree wholeheartedly about the GZ34, especially a Mullard...all my favorite amps have one!

As for the ABYing...sounds like one heck a great way to spend a couple hours on an afternoon! Enjoy!

The 69 Bassman gets a makeover
I took some vintage tolex from an old junked out SS amp and made a patch for the side where a large piece had been removed.
My first try at tolex and so I'm pretty happy with it.
The spay paint on the back of the cab was there When I got it.
I also made a hard plastic patch where the accessory plug in used to be.
It sounds great and is looking better too.
Just need a back panel.

PS I found a faceplate for the 65 Champ too, its on the way !

Chris,

Man that looks good! Working on a Dual Showman Reverb, now. See how it all turns out.

One thing is for sure. Good techs are not easy to find. Even in the Golden days. You can be proud of your work!

You guys are a walkin', talkin' Fender advert. Never seen this kind of love going into old Vox and Marshalls. But then, maybe I don't look at old Vox and Marshalls.

Blues...WOW very nice job, you sure have one you can be proud of! How did the afternoon Taste test go? How did the 69 stack up tone wise?
