Chris,

The TungSol 5881/6L6WGB is one of the finest tubes made. Really, for military use --- luckily they work fine for guitar and hi-fi amps, too! :D

Biased correctly, they usually last forever. Sometimes, longer than the filter caps.

Maybe its just me but I can't get those jj 6L6GC's to sound good in anything i have, too bright and sterile sounding.

I hear other people that like em ?????

I'm about to pull them from the 69 we've been working on here and try the 6L6GE (groove tubes supposedly made in the USA).
They at least sounded O.K.

I'll let ya know how they sound.

Chris,

I never liked the JJ 6L6GC. Their 1980-90's E34L and the current 6V6S are good tubes.

Problem with 6L6GCs, they tend to have a scooped-out midrange tone. Newer models more scooped than the older ones. So, if you've heard a BP RCA 6L6GC, dual getter blaster GE, a big bottle Sylvania, or a real Svetlana --- you prolly be spoiled. They have the top end and the good midrange. Plus, a nice tight bass.

Tell me how you like the Sovteks.

Yeah, used the GT6L6GE(pseudo USA GE) in the Bassman for sometime. A very balanced sounding tube. Rock solid ma, over time. Replaced mine for NOS Tungsol 5881/6L6WGB, last fall. All I can say, is that GT is good for rock. But the Tungsol is the key to Blues and R&B type of sounds. Keep in mind, that my guy is a reverted 864 in a 2X10 combo. So this may not be germain to your situation! Art

The 6L6GE Groove Tubes are an improvement for sure.
I also put a cap back over the 100K resistor to see if too much treble was getting through, between the two changes it improved a lot ! and has a nice tone to it.

Ya those big bottle Sylvanias in the 67 are the stuff !!! sure wish i had some more of those !
Well I do but they lost the silver on top (gas leak) ? and are now microphonic as all get out.
I ordered a set of Tung-sol RI 6L6GC's to try out, although it seams as if the TS RI 6V6's went to the dark side, I have yet to hear any bad press on the 6L6's
We shall see.

Nearly forgot this tidbit of info.
The 96 50th Strat I picked up and have been playing a lot lately needed a set up and i found that some noise was due to pickup height, dropped them dudes down where they belong and lost some of that funky (not in a good way) sound.

OK fellas I got one for ya

The 69 Bassman has been sounding awesome ! got it tuned up and dialed in.
Well..... until this morning, I'm playing along and I notice reverb, yep reverb from a bassman with no pedals (I'm not loosing it).
I had a wire that when moved caused the chassis to be microphonic, the whole chassis, I re soldered the wire at both ends I think pin #1 on V-2, (this was back when I was fixing the circuit mess and filter caps).
This morning the whole amp is microphonic, tap on the top and I hear it through the speakers, tap on the chassis and you really hear it !

?????? what the heck ?
I got a little unhappy sound when I wiggled the 12AT7 also, like the socket is iffy or at least needs cleaned tightened etc.....

Hey dude, you're not the only one!!! Had an intermittent pop(arc) surface in my Bassman the other night. Do you want to see a guy cringe? My fear was a nasty resistor(what a pain). Luckily, on my amp the bass and normal pre amp channels are totally seperate. The arcing was coming from the bass channel. Dodged the bullet! It was the 6072/12AY7 in the V2 position. The bite is only that it wasn't a cheap tube. Slipped in a NOS RCA5751 and all is well. Guess you never can tell about the weak links!!! Art

Art,

Want to try an experiment GUARANTEED to cause you to change underwear? The "Old Pop Test." Get a small screwdriver with a GOOD plastic handle. Now, touch the signal grid of the input 12AX7s.

Also fun is when the anode pins of the 12AT7 (reverb driver or PI) goes bad. Just touch the soldered tang and sit back for some kinda fun!

You won't soon forget it.

This is why when My son got the gig as a bass player I suggested hey not use vintage tube heads on the road !
I can't travel with him and make sure it keeps running either.

I was going to try to let him use one of the bassman heads but that would have been a real issue by now and he would have been out there trying to find a rig on the road.

Yep, the pop test is legendary!!! Still use it. But, during the voltage check with the meter! Art

OK this one is for the record.

Side by side (sort of) taste test.

The JJ' 6L6GC tubes were sterile and way !!!!! bright !

The Tung-Sol 6L6GC STR tubes were warm and completely alive !
Kinda like the difference from chewing on sticks to eating a hot out of the oven piece of Georgia made Pecan pie !

Overly dramatic ??? I don't think so, All I did was switch the tubes and re bias and I'm back to Lov'n this amp

I liked the TAD 6L6WGC short bottles the same way.

For whatever reason EH & JJ's just sound thin and bright to me.

These are my personal opinions and you are completely welcome to your own ! 8)

Chris,

Very nice looking! Be interested in how those TSRI-6L6GC STRs sound after breaking-in a bit.

So far, they've been getting pretty good reviews.

Beautious, Chris!!! I remember, when I finally got the thumb screws and anchors set up for my '67 Band Master. Still really dig it when I get that amp on a stage(not often enough)!!! It's kind'a like, " yeah the geezer and the B Master are still crankin' the deal". Art
