Chris,

Best soldering tip (lterally) -- use a small FLAT tip. Like the one in the link. I get a much better solder with less blobbing.

I like this simple station, for most board work:

The bright switch was shot ! no reading between the pins on either switch setting
not zero either just nothing.

It was popping when switched but made no difference in tone.

also the volume pot on the bass side goes from zero to 82K ohms ????
Can I use a 1M pot there ????

The AA and AB165 and the AC568 use 1Meg Audio Taper. The schematic for the AA864 is so smudgy that it is hard to read. But the Normal side of all four use the 1 meg Audio so I would expect you will be good with that.

Ya I couldnt read the dumb layout and was getting weird reading from the pot itself.

I ordered all new caps for under the hood (filter caps long since replaced)
some 100K 1 watt CC's a new bright switch and a few other odds and ends
I got F&T 25/25@25volts to clean up the board a bit for the two pairs that sit right next to one another.
150's everywhere else, even those .01's the 150's are rated 630 volts
500 was the best I could find in Ceramic disc.

Looking so forward to hearing a tone I like past 1.5 on the volume pot !!!
It sounds like it should at low volume after that it is so grainy and bright it makes you cringe.
And again I'm playing it through a closed back 2x12 with C-rex on both sides.

AES says my order is in route :D

Not that it matters. But the 864 bass channel uses: 250K-A(volume), 50K-A(treble), and 10K-A(bass). I used PEC for the 250K & 10K(tight fit-but very quiet pots). Since your preamp section hasn't been changed, this is a non issue! Just sayin'. Art

So....
I was thinking about swapping out the normal channel volume also
is there any reason not to use the 1M there ?
Thanks for keeping an eye on this build / repair / disaster

P.S.
Hey Art I have four more posts than you

Chris,

The NORMAL channel has a 1-meg Audio taper pot. The BASS channel has a 250-k audio taper pot.

I wouldn't change the value of the new pot in the BASS channel. It'll affect the final tone. Pretty sure about that.

Gotcha !
So I need to find a 250K and swap out the bass channel and use that 1M for the normal channel.

This amp is gonna be so quiet you won't know its running 8)

Ahhh,, I can see that on the layout page, the schematic page it's blurry.

Strange that in the 165 circuits that they changed it to match the Normal side. CBS cost cutting?

Sorry about that Chris. But it never hurts to have a spare 1M A laying around.

Yeah, on the layout it shows
V=250k A
T- 50K A
B - 10k A

I bought three from AES the last time I ordered.

Looks kinda like the '65s they saved money by using the same pots on all channels and using other fixed components. The 250pf cap and what I think is a 220k on the treble pot changes to just a 500pf cap and no resistor in the 165 circuits.

Art,

Prolly the use of different value tone stack pots in the two amps.

Saw that. When they went to the 1M volume pot (and 250k bass and treble) they swapped out the 250pf cap and resistor maybe 220k or 250k (on the treble pot) for a single 500pf cap with no resistor.

Also that .01 cap across the 100k resistor off the plate of the first (Bass) preamp stage is NOT 864. [edited]

Would really love to hear the difference sometime. Understanding that there are other differences in the 864 circuit. The "Normal" side is virtually the same.

Should have a load of caps, and resistors by Friday and by the end of the weekend if the Good Lord is willing a tone monster !

Punchy little dude already, hopefully it will loose the bright fuzzy's at higher volumes.
It's tough when I have my Bandmaster Reverb right next to it to compare, poor thing didn't stand a chance
That BMR holds on to a rich melodious tone all the way to the top and although it has a wonderful reverb it has little to do with the overall tone.

I sure hope to report something good by Sunday afternoon !

Keep in mind that we've come a long way since the beginning of this project.
Wrong transformer, no sound at all, tubes flashing, fuses popping etc......
Art & Poor Beemer put up with a lot of whining from me as they tried to diagnose and give direction, Long Distance.

You guys are awesome !!!!!!!!!!!

Chris, no problem. that's what the Board is for.

BTW.. you run a Precision through that amp? How does it sound in BASS mode. I ask, cause ran a P-Bass through a co-worker's B15. Tube amps have this nice "round" bass tone. At least in a good sized living room area.

Good luck with the caps & all.
