Yep MM still expensive and I am not sure if they have a budget line or not. I didnt check.

But Magnetic Components has been making transformers since 1943. They have a great rep and I like the fact they are made in the US. The reviews on their iron is very favorable.
I should have it in by the end of the weekend. Will post wiht the results.

I understand Mercury Magnetic and Magnetic is not the same company.

well...........installed the new OT and have the same issue. I did some voltage checks and nothing seems to be grossly wrong. Swapped a few PI tubes. Will go back to square one and find the prob. The trouble shooting continues....

mxvin, had a funny feeling about this. You should check all voltage points detailed in the schematic and layout.

Good luck!

re re rechecked all the voltages. They are all within spec. Tried a diff set of power tubes as well as a PI tubes. Reflowed any suspect solder joints. Pretty much still the same on both channels. No reverb tank hooked up BTW and Vib is not active......i.e. no shorting jack or pedal connected.

The volume seems "normal" once I hit 4 or 5 on the dial. But from 0 to 3 is def too low.
Called it a night but tomorrow will check the volume pot again....
any other hints???

mxvin, have you tried different 12AX7 in the input stages. If so, sounds like you may have a defective volume pot. You can hook a DVM to it and see if the resistance seems to be reasonable. Problem with volume and tone pots... they tend to be Audio or logarithmic taper. So, the readings will not be linear WRT dial position.

All you really test for is lack of continulity in the pot's wiper range.

actually...I was thinking why didnt I check the vol pot already???
Then I rememebered it happenes on both channels. Not a pot issue I assume...

well after weeks of checking this and that I have settled with the fact that this amp's volume pots are just an odd taper perhaps. Once the volume gets up around 4 its normal and it is certainly loud enough for a 35 watt Fender. The amp sounds great with 2 x 10 CTS alinicos. Also mated to a 2 x 10 1963 Tremolux cabinet. Although I dont like the closed back tone. Will make an open back for that cab. The speakers in Ttrm cab are reconed Jensen p10Ns.......

jammed with this amp last week with a full band. No issues cutting through at all. I just have the volume at 7 instead of 5 with my other similar Fenders. Also I am digging the 2 x10 set up as well as a combo. The Trem cab will have to be an open back for me to like it.

Nice you got the amp to work well. What kinda amps are you competing with in the band? You may need to go to a 4 X 10-inch cab.

Just a thought.

nah....just in my basement set up. The other giutar player is playing out of my 65 BFSR.
We keep the volume reseasonable. If we play out I will be miked or I have other amps that are bit higher on the volume scale...
