Hallo Allemaal
I’m new on this forum so I say hello to all of you!

I recently got this (these) cabinet(s), they were thrown into a trade which also made me owner of a Bassman50. The former owner installed tweeters and used them as stagemonitors. He thought they were junk so I got them almost for free.

When I opened them up I was happy to find the original speakers were still inside. It is a pair of Oxford 12L6-1. They are also printed with #465-512. Dimensions are roughly 32x20x12 and distance between the bushings on top is 25inch.
Best guess is that this is a ’65 Bandmaster 212 cabinet. Am I right? (I spend hours on this forum consuming info, thanks!)

I want to repair/restore this by joining the halves with a strong constructionglue. I would like this cab to accompany my new Bassman50 (play guitar through it) I wont be the prettiest cab but darn, I like RatRods so why not RatRigs.
There are still some questions I like to ask;
- Is it safe to hook these speakers up with my Bassman50
- Do the speakers need some sort of treatment before I vent them with powerchords.
- Any opinions how these speakers will behave with a Bassman amp?
- I can get a pair of Jensen C12N 16ohm for a fair price, the seem period correct, but can the Bassman50 handle an 8ohm load?

Thanks alot,
Tjeerd

The Oxford 12L6 was the correct speaker for a mid '60s Bandmaster or Pro Reverb. Yours were made in the 12th week of 1965. The Bassman was usually equipped with 12T6-10's (same speaker as used in the Twin Reverb). Since the anchor bushings are spaced at 25 inches, it's safe to assume that the enclosure is (or more precisely, was) a Bandmaster. Standard exterior dimensions for this cab were 32"W x 21"H x 11.5"D. Restoring this piece is hopeless -- I could build a 100% period-correct reproduction enclosure in half the time.

Wow - can't believe someone sawed the cab in half!

Arjay is right. You can certainly try to put the two halves back together, but it's like Humpty Dumpty - it won't be the same as a whole cab.

That being said, sounds like you got it for free, so there's no harm to trying what you're suggesting - just go into it knowing it may not sound 100% and don't spend too much. Arjay is correct in that he and others can build you an excellent repro cab for not that much. But if you want to have some fun (and you got it free, here's what I'd recommend:

I'd first snip the wires for the tweeter in the cabs and ensure that you have just the 2 guitar speakers wired up. The Oxfords should be fine, but I'd try them out first with low volumes to see what condition they are in. It's possible that the speakers are blown from their duty as monitors; you can have them reconed by Weber, Orange County Speaker or other folks and have a great sounding speaker.

Since the previous owner also cut holes in the baffle for the tweeters, I'd leave them in so you don't create a port, which can change the tuning of the cab.

If you take the backs off the cabs, you should be able to not only glue the inner boards together, but then drill and physically connect them with carriage bolts - 5 should do nicely. Use loctite or other means to ensure the bolt/nuts don't work loose. Alternatively, you could screw the inner boards together. Be sure to remove the tolex and sand down so that you're gluing smooth wood to wood.

Cheaper method - if both cabs are relatively tight, just wire each cab so that you can have a pigtail from the 2 cabs to 1 wire - that way, you could even splay the cabinets to form a "V" for a wider dispersion. In that case, do everything except the gluing and screwing.

CL often has used cabinets for sale unloaded; I picked up a '65 Tremolux cab for $100 3 weeks ago, so values are out there.

Good luck and let us know what you end up doing.

I just bought this one today
Oh and a non fender tube head too

Mine had a no name 12 and an EV Force 12 8ohm in it

It has the screw holes for a bandmaster to piggy back on it, i have not tried my 68 Bandmaster Reverb to see if it lines up.

That one's an easy "save", BB!

Some aged-white replacement grill cloth from Mojotone, a couple of reconditioned 8-ohm Jensen C12N's, and you're on the road. BTW, the factory Fender cover for a Tonemaster 2 x 12 or Supersonic 2 x 12 enclosure fits that cab perfectly (if you're interested in protecting it).

ya buddy this one is a keeper !

Should I go blackface grille cloth or silver face and match my Bandmaster reverb ???

Very cool that its a piggy back !!! always wanted one !

(((Side question for Arjay))), can that Traynors Trannies handle the 4 ohm mismatch for long ?

Thanks

Blues, I really like the blue sparkle, silverface era grille for cabs. Just my peccadillo.

If I had a way to do the drip edge and have it really match my BMR
It would be no question

I found a 121266 stamped inside the cab, suppose its a made date ?

My only problem is that its a Blackface cab, i hate to mess with the past too much

Then, for me, the leftover straw or gold grille for the tweed era.

The Bandmaster Reverb uses a different system to anchor the head to its cabinet. In lieu of slide-out brackets at the bottom of the head shell, there are spring-loaded thumbscrews installed through the bottom that mate to ferrules in a BMR-specific speaker enclosure. The center-to-center dimension for these thumbscrews does not match those for the ferrules installed in a non-reverb Bandmaster head, nor are the ferrules of the same configuration.

The numbers found ink-stamped within your cab are indeed the build date -- specifically, the 12th week of 1966.

HTH

BB...Start at the top and get that good and anchored, then stretch the crap out of it and do the bottom, then finish up with the sides. I have had good luck with re-using both my grill cloths on my Bantam re-furbs...almost done with the second one...just one last piece of advice, make sure you leave enough cloth all the way around as it sure makes it easier to grab and stretch it.

FWIW

Oh and nice score!

The previous owner spray painted the original grille cloth and did a fine job of it !

Wish Arjay was my neighbor ! i've seen his builds and restorations, sure hope this one comes out looking decent !

Then all i have to do is store away one of the other 2x12's i have

That EV speaker that was in there was indeed a brute !
I will say it handled the cranked up traynor all by itself and never gave any suggestion it was tiered.

Now I'm looking for a nice pair of alnicos for the new cab !
