Shimmy, I learned the same color code "trick." Except O + Oriental. And V = Virgin.

Guess those Ham guys were a bit cruder. Learned it in summer after 5th grade, building an old Heathkit SW Receiver. All tubes. Boy, I sure wish I still had that unit.

:D

One of the best book ( if not the best ) to show simple way how to work on tube amp and to modify . Good explanations , lots of nice sketches.

Good for anybody with basic skill

Writtent by the builder of Garnet Amp ; Gar Gillis

There is a lot of good stuff in that book. I refer to it often. A book does not have to require a PhD to read and understand it to be useful.

Kind of crude, but this is the way we were taught to memorize the color codes. "Bad boys rape our young girls, but violet gives willingly." Remembering that black (bad) is zero, I start with brown (boys) one.

Bad........0 Black
Boys.......1 Brown
Rape.......2 Red
Our.........3 Orange
Young.....4 Yellow
Girls.......5 Green
But.........6 Blue
Violet......7 Violet
Gives......8 Gray
Willingly...9 White

I haven't heard that one in 40 years.

Use "Ravish" in place of "Rape". Sounds a little better.

Good suggestion. Of course this came from a time when being PC was unheard of.

It wasn't that long ago that it was common in nearly every maintenance shop in any manufacturing plant to have pictures of naked women plastered all over the walls and on the tool boxes. I was fine with this as I always enjoyed the pictures. :D Then, one day I had a service call to a downtown jewelry makers shop. The shop was largely staffed by women, and at their benches were, of course, pictures of naked men plastered all over. Although I didn't care for these particular pictures, I did enjoy being ogled by the women there when I came in.

Shimmy, that ditty about resistor color codes may not be PC... but I've never forgotten it. What is even MORE non-PC... I was taught first B does not = "Bad." But, equals BLACK. As in "Black Boys Rape Oriental Young Girls, But Virgins Give Willingly"....

And this was from the teacher at Summer School Museum Science & Industry course for 5th and 6th graders.

Ahh,, the days of non-5 MPH bumpers. And real hamburgers.

Yeah, I changed it to "bad" myself some time ago.
