My new years resolution was to increase my technical guitar capability. So i was doing a bunch of pure scale work last night. Noticed hum from my SFSR, then fuse blew :-(

Chassis was very hot, much hotter than normal. So today is abut pulling all tubes, getting sme new uses and starting the test/troubleshoot routine again.

Hopefully not a PT or OT issue. Wish me luck. Maybe repetitive scales are not a good thing .....

Start by trouble-shooting the power supply -- power tranny, rectifier, filter caps, biasing circuit.

Arjay, good tips. If I may add one more item. Check the sockets. If they are worn out --- replace them with quality ones. Esp the rectifier and output tube sockets.

This amp is worhty of a thorough rrestoration, IMHO.

sounds like a bad or a few bad filter caps. Replace the fuse and pull all the tubes. Fire the amp up and see if the fuse still blows. Or take the dog house off and look at the caps. You may even see a visual sign. Dont shotgun stuff until you take a good look. Fuses are cheap...tubes not so much

New guy here :)

I'm not used to the acronyms used here. What amp does SFSR translate into ?

Thank you sohara111.

I'm familiar with that amp and I agree with T2Stratman. They are some of the greatest amps Fender ever built.

Well, a nice end to a potentially bad day. As per Arjay, i checked out the PS sections and all was good. Then proceeded to insert a tube at a time. Power tube number 2 put on a nice light show, hum came back and poof. Luckily i still had my old tubes and subbed tose two power tubes back in and voila! I took the opportunity to spend some time cleaning it up and i put back in the blue molded caps i previously replaced as well. I was also having oscillation issues so invtigated and found i had replaced a capacitor in the reverb section with an incorrect value. Snce i was there, i replaced the power tube resistors and an aging 25/25 electrolytic.

So reset the bias, with a 6ma difference between the tubes and voila, all fixed. In fact better since the reverb now no longer oscilating and the blue caps brought back some sparkle. Now i just need to get two more power tubes. These tubes were purchased new earlier last year from Tube Amp Doctor. Hopefully it wasa one off. They were biased properly, maybe even a bit cool, so not sure why one died so soon.

What was really cool was that i had a much better capability in working within the amp than i have ever had before. You really get to know the amps to a much better level once you start to update the guts.

Thanks again to all for your teaching and guidance - much appreciated.

Over the holidays i did get the Les Paul special up and running but did not make any progress on the cosmetics of the SFSR. That job will be starting soon.

I gave up on TAD some years ago and never looked back.

Electro-Harmonix's 6L6EH has proven to me to be a good-sounding, reasonably-priced, and durable power tube. Unless a client specifies something else, that's what I've been using for all of my re-tube work.

Chris that isn't good news!! Concur with all of the previous advice. But for sure you'll have to test those trannies. There aren't many parts that can generate alot of heat, and transfer it to the chassis. But there are tubes and components that can cause the trannies to overheat. Once you find the culprit, don't hesitate to test or have the trannies tested. Art

Hi Art,

I did do some basic testing of the trannies checking for shorts, opens etc before I powered it up when I tested the PS components.

With the heat I was sure that a had a bad trannie. That sounds a bit suggestive - luckily I am in a safe crowd :D

Thanks Arjay - good to know. Not in a hurry to return to them based on this experience. That is also good to know about the the EH 6l6s. The EH stuff seems to have a really mixed reputation, but that opinion is only based on my trawls of internet posts.

Hmmm???...I have had very good experience (although limited) with TAD's. I have them in my Concert II, no issues, in fact they made the amp sound fantastic. I had a set in my SFSR (which replaced a set of GT's) and no issues with them either. And the guy I sold it to has had no issues with em either. Understand it is only two sets, but FWIW I have had good luck so far. And when my Princeton is ready for new tubes, I have a set of thier 6V6's ready and waiting.
