The 5751 has aprox: 70% Gain of the 12AX7 and lets the power tubes get to saturation before preamp distortion kicks in. Gives a smoother Over Drive to your amp.

That is a common misconception of using lower gain tubes in the preamp. The power tubes require a certain input level to drive them to distortion. If a 12AX7 with a certain guitar output level is able to overdrive the power section, replacing the 12AX7 with a lower gain tube and keeping the guitar output level the same will result in a lower input level to the power tubes. In order to achieve the same power tube input level with a lower gain tube as you did with a 12AX7, you will have to drive the lower gain tube harder with a higher guitar ouput level. Depending on the design, you may end up overdriving the lower gain preamp tube before the power output stage overdrives. It's a little more complicated than that, but that is the easy explanation. :D

Through an e-mail, Arjay recommended some stuff to pass on to my tech guy, which I did.

Tech guy is going to replace all the (5) capacitors "under the hood" and he had already pulled two resistors out from the same location.

He agreed that replacing the cap in the bias-supply circuit would be a good idea.

I ordered a quartet of 6L6 Electro-Harmonix's from Guitar Center to replace all of my 6L6 tubes.

Just gotta wait the 4-6 days for the tubes and everything my tech guy ordered to get here.

I put some new strings on my old F250 acoustic to use for practice. I figure I can build up some calluses faster playing at that guitar than with the Jazzmaster. :) Hurts more than I remember.

Jerry, I play acoustic quite alot. In the past i've suggested that the acoustic can help the overall guitar playing and ear-training situation(to say nothing about muscle strengh and fretting technique). But that's just an opinion!!!! Seems like your tech has the right ideas for your amp. Art

I agree with your comments about the acoustic. It is a lot harder to make a clean sounding chord with it and I do like the ear-training, 'cause I need it. It is really learning all over again because I forgot everything I ever knew and I never was very good, just a fair rhythm player on guitar and a mediocre bass player.

I never really played the acoustic before. I bought it 20 years ago at a swap meet for $100.00. Didn't learn until a few days ago that it was made in "Asia" and I didn't learn until the last few weeks that Fenders were made in other countries. But hey, at the time I knew it was a Fender and had to be o.k. :)

My amp tech does seem to know what he is doing and I gave him some suggestions from Arjay. Just waiting for parts to come now. I can't wait to get it back and hear that great sound again; maybe shake the windows a little bit when the wife isn't home

Yep, bought my Jazzmaster in a music store in El Paso, Texas in 1965. I'll never sell this guitar. When I get my amp back, I'll post up a picture of all my "stuff".

From what little I know about "Guild" guitars, I know that they are a very good guitar and can get very expensive.

Update:

I ordered a quad set of 6L6 tubes from Guitar Center and two sets of glides (feet) for my amp and speaker cabinet.

They arrived Saturday (Jan 12). They packed the tubes in with the steel glides in a 6 1/4"x5 1/2"x5" box. The tubes were in separate boxes wrapped with rubber bands with the glides sitting on top of them with some wadded up wrapping paper on top. One of the tubes was broken. I was kinda upset!

Anyway, I got it resolved with Guitar Center, shipped the tubes back the same day with a label provided by them and they a sent a new set of tubes out with next day air delivery. Got the new tubes today and they are all o.k.

Gave the tubes to my amp tech today and he is waiting for the capacitors to arrive and he can finish up my amp. I'll be glad to get it back.

Will post again when I receive the amp.

Thought I'd bring some closure to this thread.

As several of the members know, the amp tech that I took my amp to didn't know what the hell he was doing. My amp hummed like hell and he didn't fix it properly at all. What a waste of money.

BMW2002Ti took on the task of repairing my amp and discovered many many bad things, which you can read about in this thread:

http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=84522

I picked up my Showman Amp from BMW2002Ti (Steve) yesterday.

All I can say is WOW

He practically re-built the whole amplifier. Everything inside looks very neat, orderly, shiny, and nice. The amp sounds GREAT and I guess I forgot how much power it has. I put the volume on 3 and almost shook the windows in my house. Glad the wife wasn't home :D

Here she be:

Thanks very much Steve.

Jerry

Pretty cool when something that calls itself a community actually behaves like one. It is my fervent wish that we, humanity at large, rediscover the power and mental health of community. The need to interact and be able to help one another was seriously interrupted by TV. Before TV people communicated by gathering, parks were huge in good weather. We got information from each other and could benefit from information sharing. TV became the solitary source and set us to arguing over which talking head we agreed with. Yeah, I know divide and conquer is all conspiracy theory. Our corporate government would never do anything like that.

Community, the body of humanity in good health.

I am sure that amp sounds great. I love this story.

That Jazzmaster looks real sweet.
