Jerry, nice looking car...is that Pearl White? Sweet. And you like Guns? Must be the cop in ya!!! You sure are going to fit in with quite a few of us here!

Thanks for the nice words. Yes, it is actually called "Glacier White Pearlglow".

Guns: Oddly enough I was a cop for 21 years and carried a gun a lot of the time. But I never owned a gun until 1994 :)

I also try to keep my Z car nice and clean, including the engine bay :)

Jerry...that is one clean engine compartment! Your engine compartment looks as crammed full of engine as mine!!

Here is the 97...

And the 05...

I just added Lemans Blue Fuel Rail covers (similar to the 97's) for the 05, but haven't gotten around to photos of it yet...They are both sitting in storage under covers in the garage right now

And I'm with you I could talk guitars, amps, cars (vettes in particular) all day long!

Yep, fully packed engine bays. :) I think your engine bay would be a lot easier to work on, not that I know how to do much work on mine.

It probably is...the fuel rail covers cover the fuel injection rails and go over the heads (it has a coil pack over each spark plug) but those back two spark plugs require a special socket extension!
I change my own oil, air filters, and I did replace the rotors and brake pads on the 97. I went with a set from Brake Performance (out in SoCal) that were zinc plated (always shiney, never any rust) they are also dimpled and slotted. Fricking thing literally stops on a dime. When I brake I have to check the rearview mirror to make sure nobody is right behind me, because they might end up right behind my seat! I also replace the sway bar end links on the 97 with some upgraded ones, it always handled well, but now if feels like it is on rails! I am no mechanic by any means, but I can do normal maintenance stuff.
I take the wheels off when I clean it and clean the suspension peices (all aluminum) and even the wheel wells...yeah I have a touch of OCD.

The craziest engine I've seen in person was a 168 cubic inch Ford Cosworth DOHC they used in the Indy and GT-40 prototypes. I don;t know how my Dad got a hold of one -- but the things was built like a Swiss watch. Only, more precise. I still have the official repair manual. Setting top end gear timing is like brain surgery.

I wanted to put it into my go-kart. But, that was a no-go.

I've only taken my wheels off for cleaning about 3 times, but I have done it :)

I do as much of the maintenance on my car as I can (brakes, oil/filter, plugs). Fortunately, I have a friend/mechanic/engineer who knows the Z cars very well and he does any needed work. Fortunately, I have had little trouble with the car the six years I have owned it.

The brakes are a complaint of many Z owners, especially those who track them. There are several expensive brake upgrade kits available for my Z32 (1990-1996), but most of them require larger wheels. I want to keep my stock wheels so my upgrade route is smaller but still expensive. I did have my stock wheels chrome plated, which was never a option from the factory. For my mostly pleasure type driving the brakes have been adequate for me.

I'll bet he wishes he still had the Datsun, but there ain't nothing wrong with a Firebird!
I have a close relation what works for Ford in Michigan and even today you take a chance parking other than a Ford product in the employees parking lot. :)

Speaking of the Bandmaster, you know more about the amps than I do.

I use a 5751 in v-2

I do have four of the 6L6GC's though. Don't know what that other stuff is.

the 5AR4 AKA GZ34 is the rectifier tube
a 5751 is pre amp tube many players use as a substitute for a 12AX7
The 5751 has aprox: 70% Gain of the 12AX7 and lets the power tubes get to saturation before preamp distortion kicks in.
Gives a smoother Over Drive to your amp.

Trust me when I tell you, I am a student, The fine fellas here have taught me a ton about Fender amps in the couple of years I've hung out here.

I was able to get several vintage fenders back on their feet with guidance from the guys here, Recapped and ran down other components that were out of spec on two Blackface Bassman heads.

Hang around its a fun ride !!! 8)

Arjay,

My tech guy called today and told me that my amp has 3 bad capacitors in the power supply and a couple of bad resistors and one bad 6L6 tube.

I told him to replace all four 6L6 tubes and he said he would use "Ruby" tubes, stating that they are a copy of "Phillips" tubes or would use any brand I wanted.

I saw in another thread you mentioned liking the Electro-Harmonix's 6L6EH tubes. I found them here > http://www.guitarcenter.com/Electro-Harmonix-6L6-Matched-Power-Tubes-210090-i1387412.gc?source=4WWRWXGP&cagpspn=pla.

My question is would these be the same tubes you like using and what should I order ?

Soft quartet - Medium quartet - Hard quartet

He said that three of the five capacitors were bad in the power supply and recommended replacing all five, which I agreed.

So, whaddya think.

Jerry
