You may find few venues where you can really unleash a Dual Showman Reverb. Perhaps take it out to the desert north of Palmdale......

  I've actually played near Palmdale. . at Edwards Air Force Base back in 1982 or 1983 in the NCO Club (Non-Commissioned Officers) and I used this amp.

At the time I was a bass player and my speaker cabinet is a Bandmaster Cabinet. I removed the two 12 inch speakers and put two Fender 15 inch bass speakers in the cabinet with two horn tweeters. I still used it as a Bass Amp.

Speaking of the amp. Got the pictures taken with my old camera. There are about 29 photos. Hope it helps identify the amp better. It is a "Showman Reverb Amp", not a "Dual Showman Reverb" (see last photo). :)

Thanks for all your help.

Your amp was apparently built in the 51st week of 1968, which would make it the AA768 circuit. The amp has the 2000pfd snubber caps tying the power-tube grids to ground, which is a hallmark of this revision.

I know the Edwards/Mojave/Victimville area pretty well. You could set a Showman up outdoors in California City facing east and they'd be able to hear it all the way in Barstow.

Arjay,

Thanks again for your help and comments

Good to know when the amp was built and the correct schematic number. I was unable to find a two page schematic but did find this one:

Image
Also found one with the same AA768 but it says Dual Showman and they look exactly the same.

I was the bass player in a band from 1980-1983 here in Victorville. We played all over the area and outdoors a few times too. Barstow, San Bernardino, Hesperia, Apple Valley, but never California City  They may have heard us in Barstow from the outdoor gigs we played. Got the cops called on us a few times.

Our lead player had a Fender Super Reverb amp and was an old rock guitar player. He was very very good, loud, but very good. He had a hard time adjusting to country, which was what our band played primarily. I later learned that he always wore hearing plugs while we were playing. Well, I now have to wear hearing aids  Haven't seen him since 1983 but I bet he can still hear.

Jerry

Took the amp head into the shop this morning.

Just the kind of shop I like. This guy had stuff all over the shop, an old Marshall amp head, a Fender Vibrolux (I think), electric organs & pianos just to name a few.

So, I get the feeling this guy knows what he is doing and he appreciated the fact that I brought the schematic for the amp.

Won't know anything until after the first of the New Year.

Very cool, Jerry! Glad you found a good tech! OT... Used to race bikes out there in the late '60s and early '70s(BSA441 Victor and then a 400 Husky) Those were the days, early breakfast in Pearblossom and off to the races. Art

Jerry...Welcome to the forum...always nice to run across another retired AF member on here. After I saw the Victorville, North Dakota references I kind of figured you might be, so I checked your profile.

I did 28 years myself, but spent most of my stateside time in the South East (Florida twice and SC) before ending up retiring here in the Frozen North at the Gateway to the West. I played in a couple bands in Germany and did the NCO Club circuit for a bit.

You have one fine looking amp there, and a nice choice for loud bass! Stick around even after you get the amp repaired, lots of good people here and sounds like you've had some great experiences to share!

Good luck with your tech, sounds like a good one!

Tony

Jerry, welcome to the Bored... I mean Board.

OK... one thing for sure... I've seen amps (esp ones with lots of output power) show this. Burnt chassis near output tubes on top and looks ok on bottom. Actually the resistors on the socket, the coating on sockets, & tube's bases vaporizing, over time. Heat of this sort rising up through the socket openings. Sign the amp's bias is too hot.

I'd make sure the tech looks at those sockets, grid stopper & screen resistors on the 6L6GC sockets. Prolly worth your piece of mind to get them replaced with fire-proof metal oxide resistors.

Have the bias power supply circuit checked, also.

Happy New Year! Enjoy the amp.

Thats for the information and tips guys. :)

aclempopps

I believe the tech that I found is good, but I will have to wait and see if he fixes the amp properly.

I rode bikes from 1967-1971 while in Victorville. Had a 1968 - 450 Honda, then a 1970 - 750 Honda. Then from 1979 to 1983 I rode a 1979 Goldwing and from 1983 to 2000 I rode a 1983 Goldwing Aspencade. Never did get into racing of any kind.

T2Stratman

Thanks for the Welcome! It is nice to find retired AF members with similar interests and I'm glad I joined the forum. I served from 7 Dec 1960 to 31 Dec 1981 as a Security Policeman (MSgt E-7).

Thanks for the comments on my amp. I always enjoyed playing on it was very disappointed when I got it out and it didn't fire up. I believe the only thing I ever replaced was a 7025 tube once when I was using the amp on regular basis. I even had an extra 7025 tube stored inside. I just hope my tech can get it repaired and that it ends up being something not too complicated or expensive.

I definitely intend to stick around. I've already been reading posts for hours and hours the last couple of days. Lots of great information and friendly people on here. I amazed that so many of you guys know so much about Fender Amps (Lucky for me).

BMW2002Ti

Thanks for your recommendations. I will pass them on to my tech guy and see if I can afford to replace the 6L6GC sockets. Sounds like you know your stuff around tube amplifiers.

Does your screen name mean that you have a BMW with turbo(s) power ?

I have a 1990 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo with only 38,000 miles on it and I really like it.

Jerry...You are a car guy too? I am a corvette guy...I have two... a '97 Coupe in Nassau Blue w/ 41K miles and a '05 Coupe in Lemans Blue w/ 16K on it. Here they are...just a little hijacking here, but gives us something to talk about till the amp comes back from the tech! The red one is my brothers old vette (he is retired AF E-7 too!).

How about a pic of that 300ZX?

My Z was also featured in a comparison of 3 generations of Z cars (300ZX - 350Z - 370Z) by a review site much like Top Gear called "Everyday Driver". Link below:

That was great fun participating in the filming. The only time I ever let anybody drive my Z car without me being in it. :)

BTW, my brother-in-law has a yellow 2004 Corvette. I like Corvettes too.

I like guns too!! I run a web site with match scores for over 40 clubs in Area 2 of the United States Practical Pistol Association:

jmallard, I used to re-do BMW 2002. And had a nice 2002Ti (normal aspiriation with dual Weber side draft carbs). Nice midrange torque. Great for Gymkhana and Slaloms.

Nice looking car. :)

I'm not that familiar with BMWs and thought the Ti might stand for "turbo".

I know they make a BMW with twin turbos but I forget the model number.
