Happy Holidays!

Was looking on CL yesterday afternoon in a lull and spotted this "smaller 70's Fender Cabinet" for $100. Upon closer inspection, I noticed it wasn't what it claimed to be and instead was a 64-65 Fender Tremolux cabinet instead with the correct 17"H x 28"W x 11.5"D dimensions. Needs wiring, correct grillcloth and Fender logo, but pine cab is sound and tolex in fair shape. I drove down to HB this morning and paid quickly...

Image

Current baffle on it is 2x12 where as original was a 2x10; Mojotone and others have repro 2x10 baffles for $80.

Questions:
- should I keep as a 2x12 or revert back to a 2x10? I already have a Bandmaster 2x12 cab wired for 8 ohms for use with the Showman; the original Tremolux, Bassman and Bandmaster all like to see 4 ohms. I have the Bandmaster, and may in 2013 pick up a Tremolux or Bassman head.
- if anyone has a better recommendation for a 2x10" baffle source than Mojotone, I'm all ears...
- for 10", speaker selections? Was thinking Guitar Warehouse 10's, but someone mentioned Celestion Vintage 30's.

thanks!

Nedo...I would go back to 2x10 since this would put it back to original and you already have a 2x12 configuration. As for resources for new baffles...build your own, not hard at all, and can be done for much less than Mojotones $80! I did a baffle build on my Bantam and it was a fun project and came out great! Just had to remember to measure twice and cut once!

thanks T2 - not sure how good my carpentry skills are. If I had a compound saw with a fine tooth blade...

what thickness and kind of wood for the baffle if I choose to do this?

Items you'll need:
Jigsaw (for cutting the speaker holes)
1/2 inch good quality MDF works great.
Black Spray paint (baffles are painted black, I use a flat black krylon)
Circular saw for cutting the baffle to size.
8 Speaker Mounting Screws w/ Wood & Machine Thread (w/ lock nut) Mojotone sells by dozen, so do the math for 2x10 config
Staple gun with black staples for attaching the grill cloth
And you may need some furring strips (depending on what the current baffle looks like)
It really is not that hard, I did it and it came out great. (If you do a search, for bantam I am sure you can find my original post on it with plenty of pics).

Good luck...and of course you can always ask us here or PM if you need help. I am redoing another bantam right now myself.

Yeah Nedo, all these suggestions are great!! But I'd prefer a 5 ply Baltic Birch baffle board. Since the cab is pine, the baffle can be a sonic choice, to match the pine. Not to say one is better than the other, just different. Also the method of securing the baffle, floating or the fixed style is another fine variable. Hey man, it's all good!! Art

If I had the money I would do a 2x10 Eminence Red Fang cab. They have a certain magic overtone rock and roll angels choir kind of thing going with them. Overtones and harmonics that make it sound like you have unseen friendly guitar elfs playing along. They are like Celestion alnico blues with an attitude. Avatar has really good deals on them. They will sell a pair of 16 ohm 10'' Red Fang speakers for 276.00 +25.00 shipping. A single 10'' 8ohm generally sells for 249.00, although I've seen it for a little less. Pop those in a cab in parallel and you have a sweet 8 ohm cab.

If I wasn't a gypsy right now, I would whack my CC and pick those up for myself.
I would also build a cab out of baltic birch plywood.

That's my speaker suggestion. Kept it simple. No confusion. :D

Thanks for the suggestions.

I opened up the cabinet to see what was lurking inside...

http://flic.kr/s/aHsjDn54Nt [edited link to set - should work now]

Given that the baffle is trashed and I need new side cleats and possibly a new back, I'm going to turn this back into a 2x10 cab. Mojo builds the baffle and will cover it with the aged grillcloth at no extra charge. Need to know if MDF backs were part of Leo's construction back in the day. Part of me doesn't mind, but part of me wants to get a real wood back on there...

On speakers, I'm looking at the Warehouse G10Cs, but also possibly the Celestion G10 Greenback or Vintage -- since I have the Bandmaster cabinet with the Warehouse G12Cs, might be nice to have a cabinet that breaks up a little earlier.

On a side note, I'm taking the Weber California's out of the Bandmaster combo and putting them up for sale. Next stop - more G12Cs...

MDF Backs were part of Leo's construction back in the day. That cab would have come with MDF back in the day. Good luck with your speaker choices!

And the baffle board.

Thanks guys - the baffle board is indeed the fine-particle MDF I've seen before. Unfortunately, this one has been butchered; I ordered the Mojotone 2x10 baffle with the aged B/W/S grillcloth as a replacement.

In looking at that back board, it's not particle board, but appears to be cheaper chipboard - was Fender using this or is this a replacement? What would the benefits be of switching to plywood? If I did, would probably get from Mojotone or Beaver Bottoms.

While I'd like to find a set of REAL Jensen P10Qs to recone, the prices on them have skyrocketed. Narrowing my search to the following:

Warehouse Speakers G10C
Weber Blue Pup & Silver 10 (30 watt versions)
Weber 10F150 Vintage Series, Ceramic (or AlNiCo)
Celestion Greenback 10
Celestion Vintage 10

Because I have a 2x12 cab that's warm and clean, having one that breaks up a little earlier would be a benefit.

Nedo...Yes vintage Jensens have skyrocketed, but deals can be had...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Vintage-Jense ... 460b58d966

These are in excellent shape and not priced too badly with a BIN of $230!

The "R" coils are only rated for 20 watts. Even with a Tremolux, that's not much of a safety margin. Better to stick with the 25-watt Q's for the peace of mind they provide.

Tremolux's are only 35 watts, I figured 40 watts of speakers would be ok...But this was just an example that there are deals out there if you do the research or have the time.
