The model I have is the version with a Master Volume, and the Master Volume has no effect on distortion, the distortion only gets better or worse depending on how high I have the Pre-amp volume on the vibrato channel itself.

That's the way a master-volume control is supposed to work. The amp is operating exactly how it was designed to.

You can try rotating 12AX7 from socket to socket. Or insert a new one into each socket, one-at-a-time... to rule out microphony.

Yes, damaging a resistor (really anywhere) can lead to poor tonal response. Better to rule-out the tubes, first.

Good luck!

I am already aware it isn't tubes.

I'm not sure if you got what I was saying exactly, but I am aware that that is how the Master Volume does indeed work; I was just trying to make sure everyone knew the modulated distortion problem isn't present and has little to do with the Power Amp section.

So, any suggestions for some more forums I could ask this question on as well?

First of all, check the attitude, Ace. The people trying to help you are some of the best in the business.

Have you bothered to take a schematic and started tracing through the amp circuitry as suggested or should we just continue guessing what the problem might be with no further useful information?

Notniko... Ok, at the risk of further insulting your intelligence. Sometimes, when you renew the filter caps, the increase in bass response shows itself in added distortion in borderline speakers.

Have you tried the amp through a known, good cab?

If I can throw a couple pennies in the ring. Niko, if you pull V2 out of the amp, and play through the nomal channel, is all well ? Also if you're playing the vib channel without reverb and tremelo is there any change ? And yeah, a filter cap R&R can affect tired components and tubes. I think Beemer touched on the subject of pre-amp electrolytics. And like Bill said, tracing the circuits and doing a continuity test is a good idea, that includes all the ground connections . Sounds tedious , but the more you check, the better the chances of finding the problem. Good Hunting! Art
