A friend of mine built a Blackface era Bassman head. But I think I'd prefer a 5F6A head (59 Tweed). My reasoning is its only one channel and has a presence and mid control. To me, that's a must in an amp. I had a hand wired 65 Fender Deluxe Reverb, but I didn't like the lack of mid controls. Would the 59 Bassman be something more of what I'm looking for? Right now, I'm using a NOS Tweed Blues Jr. with BillM mods, but I want a bigger cab and more clean headroom. Any thoughts?

What kind of sound are you looking for? The circuit and sound of a Blackface Bassman are nothing like that of a 5F6A Bassman. The 5F6A Bassman is going to have more lower mids than the normal channel of a Blackface Bassman. The 5F6A Bassman will start to break up around 4 or 5 on the volume dial and is pretty loud by that time.

Yeah Detroit, concur with Bill. What style of music and results are you looking for? Also are you talking about headroom at stage level without the support of a PA? I use an 864 Bassman with 3X10 speakers for rhythm, double stops, and fills in a Blues- Rock band. Pretty much of a Cray and Magic Sam sound(Am Std Strat, Fralin pups). But I do adjust the mids and presence via resistor values in my amps. This is light years away from the Tweed sound!!! Art

I'm a blues guy, sort of SRV like. I don't play a lot of overdriven or high gain stuff, but when I do, I use a Digitech Bad Monkey (Tubescreamer) or Joyo Ultimate Drive (Fulltone OCD). I like a full rich clean tone without the breakup.

Well, the 5F6A Bassman is not a high gain amp. But like I said, the amp will start to break up around 4 or 5 with strong pickups and gets quite loud.

Detroit, considering a SRV leaning, I'd say a Blackface 2X6L6 amp is the way to go. Speaker configuration would be a main consideration!!! Art
