Hello all.
I have a line on a '68 Princeton silver face amp which I think I can get for around $650....no final negotiations yet. It's a silver face and I'm wondering if I should keep shopping for a blackface or is this a comparable amp? What did they change between '67 and '68? The price seems good to me but I'd like your opinion on that too.

Here's a couple pics....

If this is truly a '68, the amp is missing the drip edge trim. I'm not sure about the speaker. It doesn't look right to me. (See the photos in other 68 Princeton thread )

These are not as desirable as the Princeton Reverb and truly don't demand as much. Guide value on a '68 Princeton would be about $600 (in excellent condition). Again.... questionable speaker and missing the drip edge. You can get these for less than guide. I paid $325 for mine about 3 years ago. (non-original speaker).

As far as the circuit, CBS did not muck up the lower end student amp circuits. They are basically the blackface circuits with maybe the addition of the plug in the back or a ground switch.

This is mine......

Patrick, is that the original 'Fender" logo on your Princeton? Most drip-edge Fenders I've seen had the "tail."

Like you said, I think that Princeton of the OP is not a 1968.

No.... the logo on mine is definitely a replacement. And just think.... if it had the tail, it would sound better.

I have been thinking about the speaker...... did Fender ever ship Princetons with a ceramic speaker?

I bought mine off of Craigslist Cincinnati. The guy had bought an LP and the Princeton hoping to learn how to play, but injured his hand and was selling them off. (The LP was one of the faded Mahogany ones). The amp and guitar had come from Mike's Music in Cincy.

Yes, Fender did ship OEM round ceramic magnets with Princetons and PR's. Like this photo of a 1973 SF Princeton I redid (no verb). Note the opinional "beauty washer" on the magnet? This is a little-known mod, to get that Santana sustain out of your unit! :D

I haven't seen any Princetons or PR with an OEM square magnet speaker.

Of course the Princeton is gonna sound better with the tailed-logo! But, only if it's NOS.

Some 68s came with a tailes "plastic" logo which was a proto type of sorts. I have a totally stock Blackline 68 with a tailess logo. They are a bit smaller then the 70's metal tailess.

Yes, it does not look like the original speaker. And no drip edge so maybe not the original grill. I will see if I can get the chassis serial and any other info.

Sold.....but not to me,

Time to start looking again. Man, it's really hard to find a bargain on these amps.

I have a 68 Princeton they have the drip edge also the black lines on the face on either side of the name. Might be a later model. Also the Princeton without the reverb is every bit as good as with it. A good reverb pedal work just fine. 8)
