Hello,

I found the following amp on the internet and I have the opportunity to buy it for around $500.

I don't have much info on it, but I will receive more the following days. All I know is the (blackface) front says it is a Fender Tremolux amp. According tot the owner, the sound should be mint. The amp is a mid-1960's edition. But I was wondering if the green tolex was original. The grill cloth isn't, that's for sure .

I'm quite a noob at amp dating and maintenance. What I do know, is that I would like to own one of these one day. Can anyone tell me more? Thanks!

tolex is not original. If the amp sounds good and has the original transformers, $500 is a steal.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I decided to go for it. Here are some more pics.

Can anyone perhaps tell me more about it? I will now look for an amp tech to do a check-up. The tolex and grill I will restore myself. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Maybe a photo of the circuit would be cool.

One thing. Valvo tube!!! That is a German (Munich made) ECC81!!!! One of the finest made 12AT7. Their ECC83 has a tone to die for!

Finally some amp guts before taking it to the amp vet for a check-up.

The transformer codes seem to match a BF Tremolux. I even found a pre-euro price tag that fell out of the chassis while removing it :-).

Can anyone perhaps tell me more about the Shark GZ34 rectifier tube, because I don't find a lot of info about it.

The GZ34 looks Chinese from the image I could see. Maybe make good "Shark" fin soup. :D

The 6L6GC are definitely Russian. Look like outta Reflektor factory --- Saratov, USSR (at the time of manufacture).

Yes, the 6L6GC's are Sovtek.

By shark fin soup, you mean the tube sucks? :)

Chinese aren't noted for good rectifier tubes. Unless you are into fireworks display, at the cost of a few $$$ components.

A rectifier is one of the most important pieces to an amp. It's upstream to everything, albeit the PT, fuse, and switch. My personal opinion: do not skimp on this tube. The right one and you can plug her in and forget her for the next 20 years.

Ok, NOS GZ34/5AR4 are $$$$, for a good reason. The best buy IMHO is the JAN-Philips ECG 5AR4 mislabeled as a 5V4GA. $60 is a lot. But, it's worth it over time. These bottles test and look just like the Holy big bottle Sylvania 5AR4, which is only surpassed by the original Mullard (Blackburn) GZ34 (xf1) or Philips (Holland) metal based GZ34.

This is just my opinion. But, it's an alternative to what is out there.

Thanks for your in-depth reply. From what I find on the internet, Shark tubes don't have a good reputation indeed. And although I'm hoping for a sparkling New Year's Eve, I don't want my amp to be the fireworks!
