I picked up this Bell & Howell external speaker and cabinet from shopgoodwill.com about a week ago. These were made for 16 mm projectors. The enclosure is wood with a baked coating that looks like metal. The speaker is a 1949 (code 220936) 12" Jensen. The speaker is not coded with a Jensen model #, but from what I can tell these Bell & Howell speakers were P12P's (?). It's rated at 25 watts and 16 ohms. It came with the old cable. We took the terminals off and connected it to a 25 foot cable. Right now I am playing it through my SF Princeton Reverb. Fun stuff.

I am on the look-out for a small amp head rated for a 16 ohm speaker. I am thinking either a Vox AC4TV or a Fender Greta (which will be on sale Black Friday at GC for $99 - plus a 15% coupon).

Patrick, very cool real retro cab. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that is a Jensen P12P (one of the more sought after speakers). Think B&H used this model speaker in their projection units for many years.

Love the textured paint on the frame! :D

I've played through a Vox AC4TV. It's a pretty cool little amp. It was the combo though. Not sure if the head unit is much different than the combo. I'd definetly try to go EL84 or 6V6GT single-ended, Class "A" --- for the vintage Bluesy tone.

Have fun, with that awesome "new" toy!

Yes, very cool!

You might consider picking up one of the matching B&H projector amps, some models sound fantastic (after rebuild). You can find them on eBay, and other places. I rebuilt a model 179, very similar to a 5E3 circuit, and it had the exact same speaker and cab, and together they were a great combination. I also used the original speaker connector wired to a guitar cable and phone jack on the other end, as you did. There are several models that make a great guitar amps, like the models 156, 179, 185 and 385, among others (I prefer the models with a power transformer). Some of the earliest ones use 6L6 output tubes, and some use 6V6 output tubes. I bought a model 185 projector with amp (no power transformer, kind of odd output tubes, 25L6GT), and I just bought a model 185 with RCA 6V6 output tubes and a GE rectifier, under $200 each. They usually need some TLC, electrical cord, caps, jacks, etc, but make great little amps. The chassis are about the size of a carton of cigarettes.

The 179, circa 1945:

The 185 (no power transformer), circa 1949:

The 385, circa 1955:

Shimmy - those are sweet.

There are a couple of youtube vids from a guy that has the powered speaker and then just the external like mine. Except.... he has switched out the speaker or maybe it was missing. He's running them through a Marshall.

I love the old school look of these B&H cabs. Fun stuff.

Yeah, I want one of the speaker and cab like yours, extremely cool look, and sounds great too. I just don't see them often. To correct my earlier post, just bought a 385, not 185 (already have the 185).

I gotta ask..... who made the B&H branded tubes for those amps? Is there a way to tell.... or did B&H make their own tubes?

Patrick, from my experience Bell & Howell labeled tubes were RCA made. Should have the three or four digit or the two-letter date code.
