Ok Shimmy, I'll make that vintage amps. Hey Nedo, I think you spoke to this subject. Are you using the Sennheiser E 906 or the E609. The drummer wants to mic my rhythm amp, because he wears cans for the vocal work. While I can see his snare & high hat, he can't get a real good fix. I really syncopate and suspend the rhythm lines(and alot of fill notes & sliding sixths) . He just can't hear my amp in the mix. You know what I mean ? He just wants to run it through the board for his own monitor purposes. Vintage amps- hum rejection is a concern. Thanks, Art

Art - I've been using Sennheiser E906 mics for the past 3 years on my cabs and have been very happy with them. The sound just works for me, either in recording or live to the PA. Best of all, easy to drape over the cab and hang down (loop through the handle ensures it doesn't slip) so no extra mic stand or Z-Bar.

I had originally purchased an e609, and found it very similar to my SM57s sonically. To my ears, the 906 is a big step up from the 609 (or the 57 or Audix i5) but worth it.

The e906 has a 3-position switch to enhance or flatten the 5K-ish range; I leave it flat in the middle and it sounds fine to me.

If you're not sending your mic through the PA, the Rolls PM50 and PM50S lets you take a monitor mix on a 1/4" cable but also has a mic passthrough connection so that your guitar mic could go into the Rolls and give him a personalized mix of monitor mix and your amp level, which may help if you're low on monitor mixes. We have 2 that we use for our female vocalists in rehearsal and they love them.

Thanks Nedo!!! Kind of leaning towards the 906. That way, it will work for practice, recording, and live PA applications. Actually, the drummer mentioned it after practice last night. Really appreciate your input, man!!! Art

Art - more than happy to.

We're actually going back into rehearsals for holiday show; our keyboard player is leaving as his hearing has deteriorated and the band hasn't helped.

We're moving our drummer to Hot Rod sticks for practice, and may get plexi panels for him as well as well as looking to replace him in 2013; no more Bandmaster or Showman for rehearsals; the Princeton Reverb will be about it. I'll also be getting milk crates to get our other guitar players amp up off the ground, since his ears hear better than his ankles. Overall goal is to get the room volume way, way down.

I'll be getting my hearing checked, but will start wearing a set of ear plugs I got at Sam Ash for rehearsals. This all sucks, but remember, once you lose your hearing, you don't get it back...

As an update...

The hearing plugs worked great. Yes, it wasn't as good as not wearing them in practice, but my ears weren't ringing after practice either.

Drums were much lower in volume with him using Hot Rods, but even so, the Snare is painfully loud across the room where our keyboard player stood; I may look to get/make plexi panels - this will also help bounce sound back at our drummer. These may also help live to keep our keyboard player sane.

Princeton Reverb was enough volume for practice on 3 to give you an idea of how much volume reduction Hot Rod Sticks can mean for a drummer. They may hate playing with them, but if they can't learn to play with dynamics, it's a good solution.

Nedo, I know what you mean about the volume in the practice studio. Lately I've been taking breaks every 20 minutes or so to rest my ears. It's a drag, but that's the way it goes !!! I'm thinkin' about using earplugs, myself. Our problem isn't the drummer's volume but the lead guitar, cranking that Badcat. Art

I hear you Art (no pun intended) - as another guitar player told me, "we can turn down. If your drummer doesn't have dynamics, you're screwed." our other guitar player has been turning way up on a Vox VT100 to hear himself over the drums and it just adds to the noise and pressurizes the room in a bad way.

Sucks getting older. 45 years ago, it was no big deal standing next to the speakers.

Went to a concert last year, in the balcony, and my ears literally closed up by the end. This wasn't a loud band, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. But the club, which was a giant cube, catered to the club dance scene and just seemed to have stacks of woofers. Nothing smaller. :? The highs were nonexistent. SPL in that place was terrible. State Theater in St. Petersburg, FL. Steer clear of that place.

Went to a Mark Knofler- Bob Dylan concert last Monday. It was a circular sports arena,(Madison, WI) but half was cut-off with a heavy curtain. The PA speaker array was probably 1/3, what the Stones would have used. It was really cool!!! Guess it was the Geezer Mode set-up. Art

When I'm not using my in-ears, I use Doc's Pro-plugs.
They are nice because they knock about 20dba off the top and let the lows and mids through while filtering the high stuff like cymbal crashes. They come in vented and non-vented. I use the vented.
