Hi all, I'm a first time poster, but I've been reading this forum for a while, I'm all fender !

I have a problem with my 66 blackface vibro champ, it rattles when I play it loud with low notes, particularly the low E string, I thought it was just something being loose inside, so I tightened the speaker a bit and a couple other screws but the rattle hasen't gone away !!

Anyone experienced this kind of issue ?? I took pictures of the inside in case it could help, though I can find anything wrong with it. Not sure how to troubleshoot components.

I noticed the speaker has a tear on it's side, I don't know if that could be the problem I kind of doubt it, it's a very intense rattle.

Thanks,
Francis.

That's not a small tear and playing the amp loud will only make it worse. Fix that first, then see if anything rattles.

+1

If the rattle persists I'd look to a microphonic tube as the possible cause. My '65 Princeton Reverb exhibited that exact same symptom on any low "A" note. It turned out to be one of the 6V6GT's. It just about broke my heart to replace those original-to-the-amp RCA blackplates with a matched set of equally-seasoned Motorola-marked GE gray-plates.

Best of luck, HTH

Arjay

Wow that's a nasty tear. I would fully expect a speaker with a tear like that to sound extremely bad.

Yep, speaker "farting" mixed with a "buzzing" from the tear. These amps, with stock speaker, don't do loud, heavy bass sound very well to begin with.....and add the tear....not good.

Shimmy, yeah I'm thinking not only torn cone, but maybe also misaligned voice coil. Try another known-good speaker, first.

Need to make hook-up adapter to male RCA-jack.

Looks like a Weber Sig 8 or 8A125 will cure what ails ya, and more!
