Hello all...

I used to be a musician many years ago  . Since I quit 30+ years ago I kept all my equipment. I recently retired and now have "time again". :D

I have recently restored my Selmer Mark 6 Alto. Found out that they are one of the best sax's, even today! Also restored a Martin Baritone sax.

NOW - the question for you guys. I have also stored a Fender Super Showman (SS-1000) amp head with reverb, fuzz and sound expander, a XFL-2000 which looks like it has 8 each 10" speakers plus an amplifier (case is 48" tall), and a XFL-1000 which has 4 each 12" speakers plus an amplifier (case is 30" tall). I remember when I was young, I would stack the 2 amplifiers and it was over 6 1/2' tall.

Is this equipment at all desirable, or should I load it in the pickup and haul it to a landfill?

PS: Since I made the original post, I plugged the amp head into the XFL-1000 and "IT WORKS" with a mic. The reverb and tremolo still work (has foot switch). I am starting to think I may need a keyboard and start using this thing!

Hello FlyingAvanti,

No need to load it in the pick-up
I'll be over to get the lot.
That ought let you know it's got good value.

Cheers.

The XFL Series seems pretty rare.
It should be worth a few bucks.
Are they for sale?
~thanks~

Find a good amp tech in your area (preferably a "geezer" who may be familiar with this relatively-obscure amp), explain the situation and the circumstances to him (just as you have done here), and ask him if he'd be willing to inspect the equipment and perform any necessary safety upgrades. These early-generation solid-state amps will need some attention, just as their vacuum-tube brethren from the same era. As well, there may be issues with the "sound expander" module if it uses the oil-filled rotating drum (do not touch any leaking oil -- it is carcinogenic).

These amps are extremely rare -- in 42 years of professional playing, I've only seen one of these in my entire life, at an Ike & Tina Turner Revue concert in Marissa, Illinois back in 1969. Ike's Strat was louder than a squadron of B-29s flying overhead at 2500' AGL. The Super Showman was never known for its intrinsically-warm guitar tone but as a keyboad amp it should -- in theory -- sound great, especially with the new generation of digital platforms. It would probably do well with a vintage Farfisa too ("In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", anyone?). Let us know how you make out.

I have 3 of them. I have 2) 8-10 cab's, 5) 4-12 cab's, and 4) heads.
I also have all of the other Solid State Amps, and PA's that were made
from 68 thru 69. I can email Pic's of my collection to anyone who would like to see them. Just email me at parts545@hotmail.com

I'd like to see the transistorized Showman (not the Super Showman) if you have a pic. No vintage catalog that I know of ever had a photo -- they only showed the combos, the 3 x 12 Bassman, and the PA.

BTW we had one of the first solid-state PA's......bought it new in '68 and it worked beautifully for the five-odd years that we owned it.

Perhaps the guitarist in an Ike & Tina Turner Revue tribute band.
