Just received my 1970 Super Reverb via UPS...seller did a great job packing including packing the tubes and the metal shields separately..the panel is numbered to match the numbering on the tube packaging...I know I need to remove the back cross panel...are there any pitfalls or special protocols I need to use when putting the tubes back in their sockets...I have never done this before...don't want to screw it up...should I take it to a dealer and pay to have it done...

Just take your time and follow the tube chart. You may want to use a TOUCH of good contact cleaner to each socket, prior to insertion.

Try NOT to wiggle the tubes, too much (esp the 9-pin minis --- like the 12AX7 and 12AT7) into the socket. This can bend the pins and lead to poor contact. Just aligned the tubes correctly, & press them straight into the sockets (perpendicular to the chassis).

FWIW... I like Caig De-oxit (D5 or GN-5) for this use.

One other thing. I'd have the amp's idle bias & main power filter caps checked, before honking on the thing. Worth the small price. You can avoid future $$$$ headaches this way.

Good luck with this GREAT amp!

:D

It may be obvious, cuz no one has mentioned it, but make sure you line up all the tube pins and keys so they fit properly into the sockets.

Note the gap between pins in the nine pin tubes:

and the key in the power tubes:

Bluesky, Good point! I've learned to memorize the positions. Most 9-pin mini sockets face the same way. So the gap between #1 and #9 SHOULD be in the same orientation.

Same with octal sockets. If they aren't, I'd suspect some aftermarket mods...

Not sure what you are saying.

All of the sockets in my BDRI face one direction, but all of the sockets in my 5F6A clone face in the opposite direction.

I think he's saying (correctly) that the keyways for the large octals are all oriented to the same direction as one another, and that the sockets for the subminiatures are situated likewise with each other.

Oh. Ok. I was just saying that the orientation might differ beween different amps.
