I must be missing something when it comes to circuit numbers. It seems like most of my favourite old Fender amps have the same circuit, ie: AB763.

I noticed this when I was searching around the web for amp kits. I've been considering an amp build project for some time now. I just need to get off my $@! and do it I guess. Anyway, in my travels I've been noticing that the Twin Reverb, Deluxe Reverb, Vibroverb and Super Reverbs all have the AB763 circuit and I haven't even checked all of them, there could be more for all I know. Those are just the ones I was investigating building out of curiosity. I'm finding this confusing because some of these amps use 6L6 and some use 6V6 and wattages range from about 20 to about 80 and several points in between. Does this mean the designation AB763 only refers to the preamp section of the amplifier? And if so how does a guy find the numbers for the power sections?

As far as I know, those do refer to the Pres.

Power amps (60's) were one or two 6V6's, or two or four 6L6. I think the oddball was the blackface Bassman with the one channel voiced for Bass and the other for keyboard (although most used this for guitar, and still do.) JMHO

As far I know, AB763 just means the second series (AA being the first) of a design dated, July 1963. Not to any particular amp. So, it looks like Leo and Fred were busy that summer redesigning the entire Fender amp line.

BTW... the only AA or AB763 6V6GT amp I can remember is the Deluxe Reverb. Could be be wrong. Gotta check my files.

Correct I believe. I inadvertently lumped the Princeton and Champ in with everything else. Princeton was 964 or 1164. Something like that.

Champ was 764?

OK, so I've been thinking about this all wrong for years then. I always thought the circuit number, like AB763 or 5E3 was an actual numbered schematic and that every AB763 diagram was always exactly the same as every other AB763 diagram. Now if what I'm hearing from you guys is correct it's just a date code and doesn't correlate to any specific amp design. If that's the case then the schematic must go by the name first followed by the date code to indicate a version of said amp. Yes/no?
