I did some more checks and the Input transformer on the reverb tank is reading about 1 ohm, which seems low to me. The output transformer on the tank is reading about 163 ohms.

These readings are atypical for a four-spring medium-decay reverb tank as used in a vintage Fender amp. If it's a Gibbs or a Hammond I'd have it repaired rather than replace it with an import Belton or Accutronics.

Great news - the new Acutronics Reverb Tank arrived today, I fitted it directly after work and the problem is solved - my amp now sounds as good as it ever did :D

The original Tank was an Acutronics device - although the springs look OK and the transducers seem to measure perfect, something is wrong with it. When I get more time I'll try and investigate to see if I can see what might be wrong. The only thing I can think of is the Damper Bushes might be shot on such an old and well used device. I can't quite see them and there's not much detail on the Acutronics web site, however I'm very happy with the sound from the new unit, it's very difficult to tell the difference, so I'll keep the old unit, but I'm perfectly satisfied with the new unit.

A big thank you to all those that replied to my posts and tried to help. :)

Cheers
Simon

Good news! I keep all the old tanks and re-examine them. Sometimes, they work fine in one amp and not another. Old tanks are the cat's meow in Fender '63 Ri Reverb Tanks.

+1

It's possible that the reverb tank in the OP's amp wasn't even the original and was not compatible with the amp's circuit, specifically the grounding method.

Hi Arjay - the Tank is the original, I bought the amp new in 1976, special order for me from a small music shop in my town. I'm the only one that has serviced the amp, I can say for sure this was the original tank and it's never been changed or modified. I'll keep it and take it to work where we have some big inspection lenses to see if I can see what might be wrong. I'll post back in a few weeks if I do find any thing of interest just so others can know what to look for if they have a similar problem.

Thanks
Simon

There's an outfit that advertises their repair services on Ebay for reconditioning vintage reverb tanks. I've used them before with excellent results and their prices and turnaround time are outstanding.
