Hey guys, I just bought a fender princeton reverb silverface at an auction today for $200. I have to admit i had little time to research but its mine now. Its a 12 watter, 12 inch speaker and 3 prong ( seems original). It is missing the handle and has a slight oder like it sat in a basement for a while. Also there is some surface rust on the transformers. My questions are these

1) everything works so far but the speaker seems to be blown due to crackling sound with bass notes but sounds awesome with everything else. so what speaker do i get to replace?
2) how do i tell the age of it
3) the grill cloth seems to be fine but the frame of it seems a bit warped so it sticks out... what to do?

Hopefully you can help and thanks in advance!

Good deal

Poor sound could be defective tubes or wrong output tubes bias. First try any other speaker you have.

Princeton Reverb Silverface are made from 1960 to /1979. Did you talk about the aluminium frame around the grill cloth ? if yes this amp is a 69 or very early '70 , one of the best.

There are 3 major areas of concern that I'd address. The first would be what you've already pointed out, possible blown speaker. If that doesnt fix it, then I'd have to look at the filter caps and then the tubes. If neither of these items have ever been replaced, it's worth to note that it may be time. Bad filter caps and or tubes can exhibit the same or similiar symptoms that you've desrcibed. A thorough cleaning of all the input jacks and tube socket pins would be in order as well. If you feel that this is more than you can handle, or don't have any electrical experience, my suggestion would be to find a competent tech to check and or perform the work (there are lethal voltages and current in the amp that can do some serious and or permanent damage, even after the amp has been turned off).
I think that for what you payed for the amp and the expenses to replace said items, you're gonna end up with a great amp at a very reasonable price. Great score and have fun with that bad boy.

" some surface rust on the transformers. "

Just a little blurb. DO NOT sand that rust off. You prolly can leave it alone. Or use a rag to clean off the surface rust. If it really bothers you, just spray black Rustoleum (or some such paint) right over the rusted surface.

Sanding a tranny can lead to permanent damage. Enjoy the amp!

Likely the amp is a post-1970 model with the removable grill frame (held fast by velcro strips). These frames were flimsy even when they were new and yours is prolly losing rigidity due to the effects of age and exposure to moisture. You can often find repro frames on Ebay for reasonable money but be aware, there are no replacement sources for your original grill cloth. Recycle yours onto a new frame if possible.

HTH
