You where right Retroverbial

In the Gerald Weber book "All About Vacuum Tube Guitar Amplifier " on page 382

He talk about the Blackface Super Reverb saying that original Baffle use particle board. ( could we say all Fender cab are same ? maybe - stratele52 )

He recommend Baltic Birch ,it sound clearer and more focused than the particle board .

But it could be a matter of taste IMO.

Congrat for the nice cab.

Leo used 1/2" plywood exclusively up until the first brownface piggybacks were marketed in 1960. During field-testing, the prototypes exhibited unwanted resonances and audible harmonic vibrations when plywood was used for the baffle and the rear panel so MDF was substituted for all piggyback models. The combo amps followed suit a couple of years later, likely to eliminate the factory's need to order two types of half-inch stock. I believe the final combos made with plywood baffles were built in early '63. Thus, no regular-production blackface amps of any type will found with an original baffle made of plywood. These materials and construction methods continued with the advent of the silverface era.

Nothing wrong with MDF, was a crude attempt at making a Toppscore joke on my part. I'm sure nobody wants to rehash the MDF argument. Looks like a real quality build brother Arjay!

With help from the regulars here I refurbed two 70's fender 2x15's into two excellent 2x12's

The speakers were most of the expense, I tried mostly Eminence stuff and some vintage speakers too.

I did use plywood for baffles on the two I rebuilt, one was plywood when i got it the other was MDF and had gotten wet.

There certainly is however something to be said about having a matching cab for the stage 8)

Now that I have changed over to the much smaller Ear Candy cabs I wont go back, I can fit two 2x12 EC cabs in the space of one vintage fender and the sound is excellent !

They are nice !
The bottom is not plugged in, they are all 4 ohm cabs, i get seriously different tones from each cab as they have three flavors in each cab, the one directly under the Bandmaster has one Tonker and one speaker very close to a vintage 30 in it.

Killer overall response across the freq:

There is nothing wrong with particle-board, it's a good dense board and does a good job as long as it does not get wet. Speakers are not designed to get wet but sometimes they did in outdoor concerts.

It's what everyone used back in the day.

Baltic Plywood was first made in Russia with the thin, multi-plys. It was very expensive back then. The slang trade name for the plywood was called, "Russian Plywood".

Arjay,

I still have maybe 10 JBL D120F speakers in stock, all with the original cones. Really special speakers.

Found an ol bassman 2x15 cab cheap, I mean real cheap. looks to be in decent shape, maybe worth it to just modify that for 2x12.

Make sure it's the older model with the removable screw-in baffle board. There's really no practical way to mod the later cabs with their dadoed-and-glued baffle.

Yeah paper, those D120F's with their original 21032 factory cones are a thing of beauty. I have a few myself.

Arjay,

I don't want to begin MDF argument but when I read that can we are sure the "recipes" of particle board are the same? Yes in my opinion, there is a recipes. Today there is more or less "scrap" mixed with the wood chip and glue. Maybe the glue could be not the same too. This could change the tone .

Not sure the same in the 'olds days.

Any opinion on Lopoline cabinets? came across an empty 2x12 slant for a decent asking price.

In my opinion, the Lopoline bass-reflex enclosures do not offer enough internal volume for any speaker to perform to its design parameters.

Arnold...how about some pics? And was the baggle the replacable type? Haven't seen any updates? I did a baffle replacement in a 69 Bantam Bass Amp (replaced that dang Yamaha trapezoidle POS) and Arjay was an imense help and I learned alot about Fenders amp construction (of the SF variety anyway) doing it.
