Just wondering where you folks might be on the amp choice, for a Magic Sam(Sam Maghett) and Robert Cray, type of sound ? Art

Don't know about Magic Sam, but Robert Cray uses Matchless amps. According to the Matchless website: Clubman and ES410

So much of Robert Cray's sound is in those Custom Pickups

My Robert Cray Strat sounded Different than any other strat I ever played !
I could get RC tones from my Vibro Champ or my Bandmaster.

I am truely sorry for selling that strat !

For a good all-around R&B platform I don't think you could go wrong with a Super Reverb or a Pro Reverb. The Vibrolux Reverb would also be a good contender.

That Magic Sam is really something special, glad I read this thread because I'd never heard of him!

Check out Gary Clarke Jr, young guy right up the same alley
He plays a Vibro King

Thanks for the tip, about Gary Clarke Jr. I'll keep my ears open, Daniel. I listen to a few great blues- roots programs on NPR. Beemer, the 1484 was my second amp!!! Used it at my first paying gig. A Girl Scout dance at Santa Monica Park(1964 or '65), plug the mic into one channel and guitar in the other, get your Beatle boots(mud guards) on and there you go. "Not fade away", "This will be the last time","Time is on my side", "Pipeline", and of course"Wipeout" were on the song list!!! Geeeze, talk about stompin' down memory lane. Thanks for rattling the cage!!! Art

Ronnie Earl - a very big fan of Magic Sam uses Twin Reverb, and a Super Reverb.

You can't go wrong with any BF amp IMO...

BTW Cray still uses a VibroKing next to the Matchless and has been known to use a Super Reverb in the past.

If size is not an issue a SR is the ultimate Blues amp, beautiful cleans, crank it up and you get rewarded with one of the sweetest tone you can ask for!

Ronnie Earl is a great example of a clean Strat tone thru a SR.

Check out this guy too !
His early stuff and his voice are very Robert Cray sounding
I saw an early DVD of him in Germany and it looks like he is using a silver face Twin or Super reverb, the camera didn't get that close

http://joelouiswalker.com/

I just discovered him, not sure how his music got past me ???

Been listening to JLW for 20+ years... great vocals and guitars! Live at Slim's Vol. 1 and 2 are great Blues albums.

Yeah Cedar, I'm with you!!! Actually, use a 2X10 BF Bassman conversion cab and a 1 X10 Naylor, along with the stand-alone reverb. An '89 Am Std Strat(double blocked trem) with vintage Fralins seem to do the deal for me right now. Thanks for all the input, you guys!!! Very cool Chris! Art
