I just bought this amp and its a 1972 master volume Twin Reverb with no push pull boost. Is this a rare amp because I thought all master volumes had a push pull boost? This amp also has Grey JBL D-120's and is in fantastic shape I was also woundering if anybody could tell me what its really worth and how rare it is or how many was made? I would love to post a pic but I don't know how to on here??? Any info would be helpful Thanks!!! :)

I believe the MV control was introduced in mid '71, with the push-pull boost switch about a year later. These amps in fair-to-good condition typically command $750 to $800 on the secondary market -- add $175 for the optional JBL's. It's not a particularly rare amp; FMI cranked them out by the thousands, often two hundred (or more) a week.

So your saying JBL's were a option or did you have to order them special from the factory? I know this is one 40 year old freakin sweet amp and it sounds Beautiful!!! I know I have never seen an MV with out the push pull boost ever and didn't know if that added any value at all?

Neither the MV nor the PP boost add a thing to the amp's tone (or its value for that matter). I think you'll find that better OD, compression, and distortion effects are available from a variety of quality outboard pedals. I've owned a half dozen Twin Reverbs over the last 40 years (I currently have two) and trust me -- what they do best is clean and loud. The D120F was a factory-specified optional speaker for the Twin Reverb. Larger dealers might stock amps with them "on spec" but generally they'd wait until a customer insisted on JBL's before ordering one.

Well I have done some looking on the web and have found out they only were made for a short time in 1972 with the MV with no PPB but I don't know really how many were made but I'm pretty sure they made even less with the JBL's so its got to be a rare amp!!!

There's really no way to determine if the D120F's are original to the amp. Are the foil-cals on the back of the speakers orange and silver or gold and silver?

Well I asked the owner I bought it from and he said he bought it new and never changed them. And the back of the speakers are a orange and silver decal and they say Fender signature speaker model D120F.

In that case, they're likely original to the amp.

JBL's foil-cal format and speaker cosmetics changed significantly between 1967 and 1973.

Here's the original scheme from the early '60s......

Image

In 1967 FMI/CBS requested a foil-cal change to differentiate their signature JBL models from the Lansings used by other amp makers (Sunn, Kustom, Standel, etc). The gold was changed to orange and the full Fender logo was added......

Image

In mid/late '72 this variation appeared. The foil-cal was unchanged from the previous edition but the entire speaker was painted in a dramatic two-tone combination......

Image

The D120F's in my '78 Twin Reverb are painted in this orange-and-black motif.

HTH

_______________

An easy place to UL and post pics without an acct is :

Just upload the photo and copy the code here in the thread.

__________

When it comes to the value of vintage musical gear, amps etc.

Condition is everything.

The better condition the amp is, the more it is worth.

If it was always covered and dust free, this is a plus.

But the Silverface twin reverb was one of the most mass produced amps ever, so there are plenty out there.

The 1972 year should have all RCA pre-amp tubes across the board along with the RCA 6L6GC tubes, dual getter.

What kind of tubes does it have?

Yes it has rca tubes and is in great shape. Even though they made a lot, the one I have I don't think they did because its a 72 and when they first came out with the master volume knob and there is no push pull boost. and from what I found out they were only made for a short time in 72 and PLUS it has stock Grey back JBL's and we all know there were less produced with JBL's than others. That is why I think it is rare.

Arjay you have a very nice collection and I bet you have just a few fender amps.
Are the voiceing of the JBL's different from color to color in those pics? Also is one better than the other, and wich one did they make less of, by the way you said earyer it sounds like tey made less of the middle verion because you said it was from 67 to 72?

I've never been able to discern any difference in tone between D-series JBL speakers with differing cosmetics. However I can tell when a JBL has been re-coned using substandard aftermarket parts set. If your cones are original they'll each be ink-stamped on the reverse side with JBL P/N "21032".

The gray-frame/orange-foilcal speakers are *somewhat* rare. The D130F pictured is the only one I own among some 14 JBL's -- a mix of 15's and 12's (four of the 12's are the later K-series speakers). Further clouding the issue, JBL continued to ship gray-frame speakers with the original foilcal to Fender after the "new" design became standard -- likely due to production demands.

I own thirteen Fender amps......11 vintage, two re-issues.
