STEVE,

This changes everything,

Please post pics of the amp, it's quite possible they built some 6L6GC Amps while they were still building the EL84 amps. Your amp is important.

I have been trying to narrow this window of manufacturing.

It's like in 1960 when Fender started making the new Tolex Twins, they were still making Tweed Twins into April 1960 and maybe into June or July on a special order.

Sweet Steve,

You have the highest s/n EL84 Tremolux to date.

I have the NOS Yellow Astrons to fix er up, do you
want to restore the amp to original condition.

Your amp has the original trannys, looks clean.

The original Speakers are the Oxford 10", and were different than any other 10" Oxford Fender used.

The cool thing about the 10" Single Cab w/tone rings is, you can remove the 10" tone ring and a 12" speaker fits right into the cab, same holes/studs. The 10" tone ring fits on a standard 12" speaker set-up. I wrote this for those who don't know this. Simply remove the 10" tone ring and the 12" speaker does on the same speaker studs/nuts.

All the Trannys for the EL84 Tremolux amps are the same build dates.

Very nice amp.

Best,

Steve,
Your speaker is not the original, yours is a 19th week of 1967.

The original speaker is an Oxford ALNiCo, I will write the code tomorrow.

The cool thing about these cabs is they have a breathable double baffle system in them. IT's not a sealed cab with or without the tone ring.

Ampwares is listing the Tremolux's tone-ring ten as a 10K5 but I'm pretty certain it should be a 10M7 or 10M8. I have photos archived showing a Jensen C10Q installation in a tone-ring cab but I don't know if it's original or not.

Arjay,

It's a
10K5R-1
465-122

It's a nice big ALNiCo slug, maybe 1-1/2" voicecoil,
like a P10N, it's real heavy duty. Anybody know about this speaker?

A;; the ones I have seen have the same week build date
and speaker type, except my S.O. EL84 has a 12" ALNiCO speaker in it. I forgot what type it is, one day when I open it up I will check and write it down this time. My S.O. amp is the one built around s/n 180.

My first circuit amp has the 10" .

The amp that sold onebay for 15k was s/n 00218
and has KF on the tube chart.

Paper,

Thanks so much for the help. As you can probably tell, I am a neophyte to this.

Just from looking at how the speaker is installed with mismatched nuts, I figured it was not original.

Quite honestly, I am just glad it is in as good of shape as it is. I got it as a teenager and treated it like a teenager would, then it spent about 10 years sitting in the top of a garage in Indiana, then I finally got it and stored with a little more care.

I would certainly consider restoring it, but really do not know where to start. Replace non-original electronics? Get the tubes matched? Clean up the cosmetics? Find an original speaker? At this point, I think I first need to find a good tech and make sure it is electronically sound and then go from there. I have no plans to sell it, so there is no timeline.

Steve,

Sounds good.

The amp is worth some good money, in any condition.

It has all the important parts, the transformers and most of the original tone caps. The later amps like yours have a mix of the Blue and yellow tone caps. Putting the correct tone caps in the amp and removing the orange colored caps will increase the value so much.

Don't worry about finding an original speaker, the best new speaker I have found for this amp is the Celestion Gold 10" /40 watt ALNiCo speaker. Maybe after you restore the amp you can get a quality speaker for the amp. The one that is in there now is not all that great for an amp of this caliber.

Be very selective who you choose to restore your amp, some people can do wonders while others will make it worst.

I can see in one of your photos the V6 power tube is blown. It has a white burn mark inside the tube. This could happen from the small tip of the tube being broken off making the vacuum seal broken, or due to the mess the person made trying to fix the amp. It seems to have the original Amperex Bugle Boy GZ34 rectifier (The large glass tube at the end), so it's very possible you may have the original Bugle Boy small pre-amp tubes still. Take the metal covers off the small tubes and check to see what type they are.

Your amp is in very good condition and is easily restorable.

I have the original schematic I will upload in PDF format so you can copy it.

thanks. given your suggestions, getting the NOS yellow astrons would be good to do so i have them when i take the amp to a tech. if you have some available, that would be great.

with a specific speaker recommendation, i am sure i can find that one on the internet easily.

i will look at all the tubes again, but i believe that the 4 preamp tubes are a mixed batch. is there a good source for original or comparable tube replacements?

i am in nashville, tn, so it should not take too hard to find a quality tech who is familar with and enjoys the process of restoring vintage amps. once that part is over, i can make it a project to find the cosmetic stuff like a new knob and top handle and a foot switch and get some of the chrome parts refinished or replaced.

I just saw this thread. Are people still looking at it? I have 2 1961 Fender Tremolux's with 6BQ5
output tubes and Original Transformers. Here is the info on them: #1 Ser# 00135, PT 125P6A
606113, Choke 125C1A 606117. OT 45217 606117 #2 Ser# 00336, PT 125P6A 606116, Choke
125C1A 606107, OT Big Numbers, No Date 45217. I don't see people posting the Xformer numbers, they tell a lot. These amps were probably assembled at the same time, assembly line.
The serial number probably doesn't even tell you which one was made first. One of mine is missing both of the metal cages around the 6BQ5s. I think that people couldn't see through them in order to stick the tubes in the sockets so they just took them out.

If Triad ever put a date code on their trannies, it's pretty well hidden as I've never seen one. You have the correct P/N's on yours though so it's likely a safe bet that they're OEM to your amps.

This seems to be a "phantom thread" as we haven't heard back from the OP in over a year. It'd be nice to learn how it all turned out for him.

Triad transformers in a Fender amp is the 50's, this is 1961. The manufacturers code is stamped right on the transformer. Woodward-Schumacher 606, as in 606117 Woodward-Schumacher 606, 17th week of 1961 117, only one OT doesn't have that stamp, but it has the right part number.
