I bought some nice dual getter RCA 6L6GC off EBay two weeks ago. There is one seller posting this kinda rare tube every now and then. Thought show you a little lineup, of sorts.

You can used the images to ID guts of "generic" tubes being sold on the Net. All all good tubes, that I've used throughout the years.

7581A and 6L6GC's

1980's Philips 7581A. 1970's GE 7581A. 1990's Svetlana gold lettered SV-6L6GC. Dual getter gray plate 1970's RCA 6L6GC. Single getter late-1960's black plate RCA 6L6GC.

Note the difference in anode plate structure bewteen the dual getter and single getter RCA 6L6GC.

Two top tilted getters on the Philips ECG 7581A. Dual side getters on GE 7581A (one of the best 6L6GC type made).

6V6GT lineup.

"Regular" gray glass 1950's BP RCA 6V6GT. RCA 6V6GTY with US Air Army logo. 1940's RCA VT-107A (mil spec 6V6GT). 1950's National Union 6V6GT. British EdiSwan 6V6GT. CBS-Hytron 6V6GTY.

You can see the Philips/Amperex/Mullard date code stamped into the base of the EdiSwan.

Beemer, you're a tube monster!!! Didn't see a picture of my Pope or Marconi's. That's OK, I've already seen 'em. Thanks for the pics! Art

You may find this interesting, if not seen yet. BTW... French made Visseaux and Mazda (and Adzam) are great 6V6GT, also.

Kevin Deal's blurb (YT) on Pope 6V6GT:

Beemer...What's your take on these Popes vs. NOS JAN Phillips 6V6GT's vs. a set of NOS JAN CRC 6V6 GTY's (Second from the left in your pic there)? I have a set of both that are next in line for the Princeton and was just wondering what you thought about em.

Thanks

Raytheon, RCA, and Hytron 6V6GTY are the best. IMHO. Both toughness and tone. The Pope's have a bit smoother tone that some JAN gray-glass 6V6GT's. The Visseaux and Brimar CV-511 are tougher.

Really, they are all good tube, with ever-so-slight tonal differences. The GTY can put out more wattage (about 2-3 watts RMS) than the standard 6V6GT. They are usually made with mil spec metals (like 99% pure copper rods, etc).

The brown micanol base has better insulation quality against HV.

Beemer...thanks for the info...as I was reading the post I noticed I left out the word "RCA" of the brown based JAN GTY! It is amazing what happens when you read what you wrote!

So if I was looking for a sweet smooth tone'd tube, then I might want to try the Popes if I read your thoughts on this right.

Thanks again.

"CRC" does equal RCA (mil spec designation). 8^)

Any 1950's GTY is a good tube. Ppl usually rank the Raytheon the best. Followed by TungSol, Hytrons, RCA, Sylvania, GE. The RCA has that RCA midrange. The Sylvania, the house brighter tone. And the GE more neutral.

The Raytheon is one of the toughest tubes. Very clean mids and top. Almost a mini-5881 tone. Unfortunately, hard to find NOS Raytheons and TungSols. Good pulls are still out there.

Here's a partly list of mil-spec designations:

Tung-Sol: JTL, CTL

Raytheon: JRP, CRP

NU: CNU

Chatham: CAHG

Sylvania: CHS, JHS

Ken-Rad: CKR

CBS/Hytron: CHY, JHY

Lansdale: CBRZ

RCA: CRC, JRC

Westinghouse: CWL

GE: JG

Beemer...since we are discussing tubes, what's your take on the Sovtek GZ34/5AR4 Recitifier? And while I am at it, what about the Sylvania 5U4GB as well?

Sorry about hijacking your thread, but you got me going through my tube stash and wondering a bit.

One little note about Visseaux 6V6GT or any tube with a metal collar around the base (like the TS 6550). That shield maybe tied to the pin 1 (as an EMF shield). This COULD present a problem if that usually unused pin is acting at a resistor "holder" for grid stopper, like in AB763 DR's (see layout). And Visseaux bases are painted black. So they kinda look plastic (but have a distinct ledge seen in many metal based tubes).

Check your layout, first!

http://www.webphix.com/schematic%20heav ... _schem.pdf

Just removed the clip, to be on safe side. The Visseaux has one of the most lush tones of any 6V6GT type.

Sovtek GZ34/5AR4 are ok rectifiers. Keep the first cap in the main filter supply at or below 20mfd. And try using the best you can find. The other 20 mfd cap sections aren't as critical to rectifer life. This all has to do with ripple current-recharge & time-constants.

How do they compare to a Blackburn Mullard GZ34? Or the Holy metal based Amperex GZ34? Or even a mil spec Sylvania 5AR4? All of them will get you to the store. Some a tad faster and for a longer time.

As for 5U4GB ---- black plate TungSol 5U4GB rule the roost. Followed by CBS-Hytron mil spec 5U4GB. These rectifiers were built for US sub use in height of Cold War. The mil-spec with USN anchor are something else. Quiet, tough, Crazy-@ss good response, with that cool 5U4GB sag.

Image

These are a step above the "standard." RCA BP 5U4GB.... which will last two lifetimes.

I bought a bunch of Mullard/AWV Aussie made 5AS4. These are interchangeable with the 5U4GB and are VERY quiet, stable, tough tubes. Check for good $$$$, as there are a few Luddite sellers still that don't know about this tube.

Best 5Y3GT types, IMHO?

GE 6087:

Bendix Red Bank 6106:

Standard to compare any 5Y3GT is the 1950-60 BP RCA.
