Beemer, glad the amp is workin' out so well!!! Yeah I'm on the same page, as far as the circuit comparison goes. Don't have much experience with the CTS spkrs(think my 410 Musicman had those). Arjay probably makes a good point , about getting old spkrs and having them rebuilt. Alright, Happy Pickin'!!! Art

To my ear, the CTS alnico ten sounds very close to a vintage P10Q but they command only half or a third the price of a Jensen. Along with the vintage C10Q, these are the only speakers I'll consider for my 10-inch applications. There are other good drivers of course, but they don't "blow my skirt" like the CTS's or the Jensen's.

Arjay, I think you said Weber wasn't the greatest place for recone work. Is there any other place out in the midwest, that you could recommend? Art

No -- I merely said that I don't personally rely on Weber for any of my speaker work. Many folks are perfectly happy with them.

Of late, I've been sending my JBL's here......

http://dsraudio.com/index.html

And I have some Fender-marked Jensen C12N's from 1966 that I'll be sending there in the near future. Cedarblues is also a happy DSR customer.

Arjay, my VLR is a AA270 circuit:

And my Super reverb is a AB763:

The 270 is a pretty decent VR circuit. It reversed several of the tone-thieving changes that were introduced on the AB568 revision. With decent glass, optimized idle bias, and a pair of righteous speakers, I'm betting it'll sound nearly as sweet as a genuine blackface.

Rawk on!

Arjay, yeah I can't hear the difference (below "6" between this cirucits--- VLR (AA270) and the Super Reverb (AB763). Both are running tightly matched RCA 6L6GC (within 2-4mA of each other). So, the balance pot of the VLR works well to balance the bias to 40mA each tube (at 472VDC on the plates). About 18 - 19 watts per tube, at idle.

Enjooy your weekend. I'm afraid we're sending you 110ºF weather.... :(

Yeah I heard that warmer, drier air was on the way. It'll be a nice change of pace from our seasonal monsoon rains. The other day my back yard looked like the proverbial "blue bayou".

+1 very satisfied customer!

Dusty did this C12Q for me, it's in a 68 DR and sounds as sweet as can be in that amp!

Getting a couple of C10Q from Dusty any day now...

Get 'em reconed, you won't regret it. The 4 in my SR are recones and sound heavenly in my SR!

I use one reconed CTS in my Victorilux with two C10Q, that one CTS completes that amp.

+1!

Specify a traditional seamed-and-ribbed paper cone with a modern Kapton-wound 30-watt coil and you'll have no problems. It will look vintage and it will sound vintage, and it'll keep an otherwise original amp all-original.

Arjay

I might just do that, but somewhere,IIRC it was in the Tone Lizard VooDoo Lounge or whatever the hell the lizard calls that place....he said of all the vintage speaker recones, the CTS were the hardest ones to do right,I don't recone many of mine....I'm like Arjay said, bolt 'em in Webers and not much patience.
I do have several old ones and just recently checked Dixie Recone in Bummingham,Allerbammer  ...you know us rebels we like to keep it Southern....and in the past Arjay recommended them.

Dixie did some CTS work for a buddy of mine down Alabammie way whom I assisted in the restoration of his '67 Super Reverb. He was very pleased with the results.

I once had a client's broken '65 Pro Reverb warehoused in my shop for seven months -- that's how long it took me to locate and purchase a period-correct output tranny with the proper "125A6A" FEIC part number for it.

It's all about patience.
