hahaaa....if it gets past RJ.....it's good to go!
I LOVE the VR!...that one looks good,my BFVR is my favorite gigging amp after many years playing vintage Fenders....I really like the 2x10s.
Problem is,as y'all well know,there was an article,"Under 40 Watts of Whoop $@!" in The Tone Quest,a few years ago and it seems that VRs skyrocketed in price,just like the Deluxe Reverbs and SRs did shortly after the reissues came out or before.
Getting a great BF or SF amp for a decent price is almost history now,you can get lucky sometimes though.

+1

Teagle & Sprung's book had a similar effect on prices.

+1...SF amps used to be dime a dozen...but there are still a few deals out there. It just takes alot more looking through a ton of crap is all!

That book sure did,RJ...the author heralded the Vibrolux Reverb and Pro Reverb as the best amps made depending on the type of pickups someone would be using....the PR for singlecoils and the VR for humbuckers.

Got the puppy. Stripped her down to see those guts! Seem pretty virgin.

PT = 606-1-13

OPT = 606-1-09

Choke = 606-045

Reverb PT = 606-109

Quick look, the amp seems to have the AA270 circuit.

Does look very clean!

So is the first order of business a re-cap?

VLR gets new main filter caps. I went to 22mfd/500VDC F&T versus the OEM 16mfd/450VDC ones. Note pimples on old Mallories. Few times when ages = pimples :lol:

Also, some CTS 10-inchers to replace the stock ceramic Oxfords.

CTS alnico's......a man after my own heart!

I think you'll find that they and the .22ufd filter caps will add some punch to the amp's bottom end. A wise decision.

Decided to try that Philips ECG mil spec "5V4GA" labeled 5AR4. Getting 435 VDC on the plates and biasing at 40mA per tube (About 17.5 watts per tube). Initial tone is very good. Bluesy wth pretty good balls. Kinda like a lil brother to the Super Reverb. Maybe, not the complex harmonics of the SR. But, more mid-bass harmonics than the PR or DR. Maybe, due to those twin 10-inch CTS :?: :!: :?:

A very good amp between the 6V6GT amps and the whopping 6L6GC ones.

BTW... I've been using F&T and other brands, if I can find them (like NOS Panasonics), for the main filter caps. ESP the first one after a tube rectifier. I've had two Sprague Atom fail, in this critical position, soon after replacing & ramping up. I have heard others with similar issues. Seems that the failures center around certain lots made last year, through early this year (Hearsay).

No failures, so far with the F&T. I now ramped-up ALL cap jobs. I have had better long term luck with this process. But, it does NOT correct a defective cap, off the shelf.

Gain stage/EFX/PI lineup. I'm using a Mullard CV4024 in PI.

Looking good!

Don't want to hi-jack the thread so I apologize beforehand but I've seen NOS tubes with the smoked-glass. How different are those?
