I'm not sure if this is the right forum category but my amp is a 60th Anniversary Woody Pro Junior designed to be like a 1946 model... So I think it counts :)

Anyways I'll get to the point, I've decided I'd like to run an audio device that outputs stereo to an amp that only naturally outputs mono since guitars are mono devices. The reason I'm noting this as an issue is that most modern music recording output different instruments or vocals in the recording in mostly/completely in one speaker and mix it up a little if you know what I mean. An example could be having rhythm guitar mostly in the left speaker, lead mostly in the right speaker, drums swapping every so often and vocals in both. The problem comes when outputting to a mono speaker. All mono speakers by default output the 'Left' stereo speaker audio only.

I have the necessary adapter for a male/male aux lead to fit into a 1/4 inch jack socket already. Are there any options where I can combine the two stereo signals together so that the amp can output them?

Many thanks,

Doddsy

Read this article - you'll need something besides a y-cord.

Radial DI's like the JDI have a stereo to mono merge function that I've found helpful.

Ok... Not being an electrical whiz kid I don't really get some of the stuff in the link you posted. But... What I got from reading it was that you cant just combine the signals because it would cause damage from low resistance on both output devices (Audio Device and Amp?) I'm currently just using an adapter that I can plug a standard headphone jack into and then stick that into the 1/4 inch amp socket. This doesn't combine the two stereo signals as expected. Does this refer to being able to cause damage even if the signal is still mono? I understand I might need something called a summing box but I don't really understand what it does :L All the websites that try to explain it, explain it in terms that an average Joe like me can't understand (no offence meant to any Joes out there).

bigger issue is that you can get phase cancellation and other sonic issues by just combining the signals.

If you can get the right cable (or make it) you can avoid these problems.

The other issue is that some stereo effects "collapse" when merged to mono, so you'll need to see if it works for you.

If your audio device (which one?) has a mono output, you're probably better off using just that.
