Hello. I am new to the forum and so I apologise if I am repeating a previous question. I own a few Fender amps, the best of which is a Fender Bassman 5b6 (Of which I am seriously proud! Serial no. 049) I play an EKO barracuda and a Hofner Senator through the amp. When playing the amp suddenly makes a loud crunching noise and becomes buzzy for a few moments. Any suggestions? :D

It is very old amp, you are lucky to have this amp
Could be power tube , 6L6's or 5881 .
Could be also filter capacitors, bad solders, or defective resistor in power supply or plate resitors on preamp tubes or dirty tube's socket contacts.

Better to find a good amp tech. Not anybody who can "play " in amp .

+1

"Motorboating" can be caused by any number of microphonic components, an aging solder joint that's become marginal, a cracked dielectric insulator in a tube socket, a tube itself (as was mentioned earlier), or even an intermittently-open or shorted wire in the umbilical cable between the pre-amp and power amp

Try to find some old codger who's familiar with the early tweed Fender architecture and have him perform a full bench-check on the amp. Repair or replace any components that have exceeded their drift specs and/or service life. These TV-front Fender's are extremely rare......do not let some hack butcher it.

HTH

+1 on finding an "old codger" to work on the amp.

Here's the schematic. Not a whole lot inside:

Should be pretty easy to trace through. Has any work ever been done on the amp?

rjm4,

One thing I was wondering. Are you actively gigging with this amp, or just casual playing? Given the age of the amp, has anything ever been replaced inside (besides tubes), such as caps, resistors, etc? Have you converted the amp to a three-wire power cord for safety? I ask because if it is all original, you may want to consider retiring the amp as replacing any faulty components will most likely affect the vaule of the amp. Unless, of course, you are able to find correct date coded NOS parts which would probably be quite expensive (particularly caps) and no gurantee that they are in any better condition. You could then have a clone of the amp built to gig with and tuck this one safely away. It's not a complex amp and would probably be easy to duplicate.

Oh, and as we are fond of saying, we need photos of your amp or it doesn't exist.
