Hey gang....I hope to build a new speaker cabinet to match to my '76 Bandmaster Reverb 5005d. I like the amp, but have run it through a Marshall 1966b 2x12 with a pair of Celestion 12T-75 speakers.

I've decided that between the amp and the cab, my tone is too "shrill", if I dont turn down the treble and accent the bass and mids. Moreover, the cab is solid back with no ports. The thing is hyper directional, like a laser and I often cant hear myself play as the sound passes along my knees. Unless I turn it way up. Of course, then anybody standing next to the stage gets scorched with ear-drum burning shrill tones unless Im really on my game.

So, I'd like to build a cabinet to match my Bandmaster, potentially including bass ports and a tipped back baffle so the sound travels up to me, rather than along the floor.

However, as I read about these Celestion 12T-75's, its seems many people think they are very shrill sounding by nature, exactly the trouble Im having. So, Im considering whether to just sell the Marshall, as is, and build a completely new cabinet, including new speakers.

So....my question to you amp-nutjobs is this.....What 12" speakers would you pair with a '76 Bandmaster Reverb 5005d?

Incidentally, I play a Strat with CS'69 pups and a Les Paul with the 490R & T humbuckers. I love vintage style tones.

Thanks much for your advice and comments!

For a warm vintage vibe, go with a pair of original Jensen C12N's (not the re-issues!).

If you lean towards more contemporary rock tones, the Celestion V30's may be the ticket.

A pair of Kendrick Blackframes wouldn't be a bad choice after the Jensens suggested by Arjay. I think these sound better than the Celestions...IMHO.

+1

The Kendricks are a great-sounding premium speaker.

Thanks guys. I'll check them out.

One more question, please.

The amp is rated to 4ohms. Those speakers are likely 16ohms and 8ohm in parallel.

Does it make sense to consider a 4x10 cab, rather than a 2x12, so I can get to 4ohms?

This would make the amp louder, correct?

Thanks again.

Who told you that?

Nearly every commercial loudspeaker is rated for 8 ohms. I don't know if it's codified anywhere but that impedance is the de facto industry standard. As well, most companies do make their speakers available on request with alternate specs -- 4 ohms, 16 ohms, even (rarely) in 32 ohms.

Your BMR will perform at its best with a system load of 4 ohms. How you arrive at that figure is entirely up to you and whatever cabinet configuration you choose. As long as you have a grasp of Ohm's Law and know how to connect wires competently, you'll have no problems.

Thanks!

In fact, I've found this Marshall cab Im ignorantly using is loaded with 16ohm speakers. Im losing 12% of the power to the speakers with mismatched resistance.

I suspect I'll stick with a 2x12 configuration, just to maintain the surface area and bass response.

BTW....Somebody pushed me toward Celestion Heritage G12m speakers. He says they provide a great vintage tone. Any thoughts??

So far I've run this selection of speakers with mine
one Cannabis Rex and one Red Fang

Two fender labeled eminence out of an 80's 2x12

and now I have a Tonker and a usa made carvin british series

All three sets were 8ohm speakers wired parallel for 4 ohms

I've always found the G12M to be a bit brighter and livelier than the V30's, sometimes to the detriment of the overall sound. In a bass-reflex (sealed back) cab they'll likely sound similar to a US-made Eminence speaker.

Hey....am I looking at the right speakers??

I see Jensen 50w 8ohm C12n speakers out there for around $85. These are the reissues, but I've found tone comparisons out there between vintage C12n and modern C12n speakers. The modern versions are brighter with a harder attack. Otherwise, similar.

I like the tone of of these C12n's...vintage and Straty. I also like the Celestion V30s, but they are quite a bit more $$$.

Does that seem right to you?

Thank you.

My humble suggestion is to read through the Eminence catalog and see whats available, then read some reviews, if you read enough of them you can sort through the wannabees and get some solid info.

That or Celestion depending on what side of the pond you want your speakers made.

I'm still feeling out the Tonker and "british" USA made (eminence) Carvin combo.
One is around 100 watts the other 150, but I do hear both speakers.
Keep in mind the Tonker is fresh out of the box and so I can't say much for a few weeks.

The power-handling spec is relatively meaningless as it applies to how your ear perceives the loudness of two different speakers played in unison. The more significant stat is their SPL's. If they're close to one another -- say within one or two decibels -- they'll be nearly equal in volume. It's only when the SPL deviation exceeds three dB or more that their differences start to become audible.

It never hurts to schedule a "refresher" seminar since we have new forum members joining daily.
