Hi,

I am new to the forums, I just picked up a Fender Princeton amp, and would like to know if its a 1962 or not.

Here are a couple of pictures

Data from this site seems to indicate that your 6G3 dates to 1963......

Cool old Princeton that's seen a lot of action...what does the modded knob on the back panel do?

+1

I'm guessing it's some variable control for the NFB loop. I wish they hadn't drilled a hole into the chassis.

:(

Arjay, yeah that is what it is. Called a "presence" control --- though not quite like the one on Brown faced Fenders (like the one in my 1962 Pro). I've seen several Fender amps with this mod. A couple with smooshed in pots from being damage while being hauled about. I've installed flat dials to avoid this problem, if the owner insists on keeping this mod --- which I strongly recommend re-setting back to OEM.

Beemer, neat blog about the SF Champ. I change the NFB resistor ratio in my(2) mid sixty Fenders, for a more raw sound. The '55, 5watt amp doesn't even have a NFB circuit. In some Bf amps I've used the Ken Fischer 1uf cap mod to open-up the presence. It's all sonic fun!!! Art

Art, what I do is not only drop the feedback voltage to pin 8 of that 12AX7, but remove the voltage divider from the SF circuit. Replacing the stock 2700 ohm resistor with a 22K-ohm one. Going directly to pin 8. And not connecting it to the divider point (47 and 1500 ohm resistor point). You can keep the 47-ohm resistor in the circuit or bypass it.

This is more like the 5F1 setup. I then drop the plate voltage to the input 12AX7, by changing the resistor in the PS rail (22k-ohm replacing stock 10k-ohm, 1 watt). This will drop this 12AX7 into a closer linear range. Making the OD slower and more a combined 12AX7/6V6GT thing. And not an early pre-amp OD tone. Keep the voltages to the vibrato section 12AX7 plates the same.

This gets the VC a little closer to the 5F1 tone-wise. But, that added 12AX7 for the tremolo/vibrato section will always give the VC a "hotter" tone than the tweed Champ.
