Geez, I dunno......

I've been through the Ginza a few times and while the tourist "attractions" there were indeed inspiring, I don't think they rose to the level found in Nahkon Phnom, Thailand or Subic Bay in the P.I. The Cholon district of Saigon was also noteworthy. Those "resorts" made Tokyo look like a church-sponsored bazaar and flea market. The movie line "a wretched hive of scum and villany" springs to mind when I think of Southeast Asia.

Yeah I totally get what you mean in other parts of Asia and your no doubt right, I just found it shocking when I found out what was turned a blind eye too once you found the seedy side of the place, a tourist walking around Tokyo never never would, it's just that Japan's bent culture is not at all in your face as a tourist, that would be a loss of face to them to be trying to sell to you and push you, not honourable, it's not a brothel on the corner type typical Asian country. It's a scratch the surface and find any kind of weird morbid fetish sick stuff that would see you put straight in jail here or in US. I won't elaborate cause it's just downright sick. There's some really bent people in this world that are willing to pay for really inhumane and immoral stuff huh......they should be locked up..... The police presence are just nearly non exsistent in Japan. They are fundamentally traffic wardens only who aren't even allowed weapons. The only really presence of authority on the streets are Yakusa and kids in there weird bike gangs riding around trying to impress the Yakusa. It's not like Malaysia or Indonesia or china with police with guns on every corner. The police are rearly ever seen anywhere but directing traffic. You do the wrong thing in their society no police come and sort it out. The local Yakusa do. Really different culture. There is no violence or crime because the criminal industry's of gambling, drugs, alcohol and tobacco and sex and street racing are just out in the open easily accessible once you know where to look with no need to become aggressive to obtain or be be part of at any time of the day or night, without being in danger or ever being in danger of being taken advantage of. it's just as if everything we think illegal is legal over there if not totally accepted and unpoliced. And the direct result of that is harmony and no crime. I never saw even one indication of aggression at any bar, club or anywhere in the country if the slightest thing happens that may upset someone or be wrong there is people scrambling going mad apologising so they don't lose face. Really different to the pushy, make a quick dollar any way you can of the rest of Asia huh. Totally juxt opposed to other Asian countries I found. Really low key underground vibe.

Very interesting OZRV!!! Closest I ever got to Japan was Kaui. And then only playing acoustic back-up for a dynamite flute player, in Maui and Kaui(1970). Peace, Art

Yeah the flute would be their national instrument I would gather. They are brilliant with bamboo flutes. It is definitely a very interesting culture, very different rules to most other cultures.
