I just picked one of these up, it's a 1976. I ordered new tubes and the 12ax7 doesn't fit, why is that? it's a Tung Sol 12ax7. Also I was thinking about ordering a weber 8a125 speaker, anyone do this, good choice, huge improvement, worth it?

The Weber speaker would be a significant improvement over the OEM Oxford. Be sure to specify a 4-ohm voice coil when you order.

Is there a reason you changed the tubes? They don't necessarily go "bad" with age.

I wanted something a little crunchier in my SF Vibro Champ and put a 8F125-O in it. I already owe a Champ with the stock speaker.... so I wanted something that would provide a different sound. I love the sound. It is also a darker tone.

Ok, be sure the pins of the 12AX7 are straight and are properly aligned with the socket receptor points. And that there is no damage to the socket, itself (look for chips or signs of "forced-entry.")

I have used a lot of different makes/vintages of 12AX7 in all kinds of Fender amps --- never had issue with a good tube and socket combo. Rectifers & output tubes? Now that another subject. Stoopid companies make all kinds of diameter pins for these replacement tubes. Some way too small. Some way too big.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

The glass is fatter on those Tung-Sol RI 12AX7's

I noticed one I had wouldn't fit in a Palomino V-16 shield either

Blues, that must be the newest iteration of the "RI" TS 12AX7. Early sets I have fit the Fender tube shield fine. This may mean the actual company that is making the tube (Reflector or Kaluga, or Saratov --- or whomever) has changed. Dang Russians and Chinese do this all the time.

At least the box remains the same....

Another speaker option and one I would recommend Over the Weber is a Kendrick Blackframe 8 inch. They cost a little bit more, but are a superior speaker IMO :!:

I have one in my 68 Champ and it sounds fantastic and provides a nice crunch to it when cranked.

I've got this exact speaker in my 73 Champ. You won't be disappointed! MASSIVE improvement over the stock Oxford (which is a piece of garbage). One note: Don't judge the Weber too early when you get it - they really do need some playing time to break in. Once mine did, I really started to like it.

+1

Which is the case with virtually any new (or remanufactured) speaker. Most really sweeten up after 40 or 50 hours of use.

I have a 77 vibrochamp and would say give the oxford a chance. I find it sounds the best when its stationed off the floor or if its tilted up, then you can hear more of the dynamic range of the highs and lows. I'm using the stock speaker and it sounds good to me. When I first got it, I had my amp tech install a 1/4 inch speaker jack, and I'll use a 4ohm 12 inch eminence texas heat speaker in a separate cab sometimes with it and the 12 inch is louder, but not necessarily better, IMHO. These guys on the board know their stuff, but I feel like I can get pretty nice tone out of my amp.

Ross, the only pin size problem I've heard of were the JJ's. and that was quite a few years ago. I would use a good contact cleaner, check the pin alignment, and carefully insert the tube. In the future, i've found that making a reference mark, with a sharpie, on the glass and the socket shield mount is very helpful. Art

I'm not 100% sure which Webber this is in my Vibro Champ
No other tags on it but the decal on the magnet (signature series alnico).

It was in there when I bought the amp a few months ago, I absolutely love the tone !
hit it with my new Les Paul jr I just picked up and leave the volume at 5 and ya get some SWEET Rock'n tone !

I have to say I am loving my Les Paul Jr. I love rolling the tone to about 6 1/2.
