Hey guys. I posted a little while ago about a 5e3 clone chassis that I bought that's running 2 6l6's and a 5ar4. I'm thinking about throwing a couple of new 6v6's in there (with a 5y3 or 5v4) to see what the tone is like. Any suggestions on current production 6V6's? Thanks.

Electro Harmonix.

Tough as nails, great sound, consistent. In my experience, there is no better modern production 6V6 tube made than the EH.

If you don't have to buy new...

Mazda NOS 6V6 sound fantastic in Fenders; they're French BTW.

For amps which run stouter PT and OPT than the usual 6V6GT amps (like those that can use 6L6GC or 6V6GT) -- I like the 6V6GTY. Brown based mil spec tube, that can handle the voltage and potential current flow (during transients), of these amps. 1950-60 Raytheon 6V6GTY are one of my all time favorite, very tough 6V6GT's. These are really tone makers.

I also know several ppl that also use selected JJ 6V6S (a tougher 6V6-type tube). This tube is taller & has the guts of the mil spec Reflector (Sovtek) 5881 (6L6WGB).

Philips-Miniwatt 6V6GT/CV511 are very good tubes. As are Brimar CV511. AS 6V6GT go, it's hard to buy a bad NOS one. Provided they test well & are quiet.

I've used:

JAN CBS

JAN Raytheon

TungSol (I love the BP 6V6GTA)

JAN GE (Canadian ones are very good)

RCA

Sylvania

Ken-Rad

Brimar

Visseaux

Mazda

Just to name a few... the best (in terms of shear power and longevity)--- has been the hard-to-find GE or RCA 7408. Or the Bendix Red Bank 5992.

Shimmy, got side-tracked, again. The TAD 6V6GT has worked fairly well, so far, in one of my PR's.

lol! I was just thinking, "Here's a guy who posts asking for current production 6V6 recommendations and the majority of the posts start talking about which NOS 6V6's to buy." The only recommendation I've seen so far is TAD.

EHX builds a pretty rugged 6V6GTA. They sound sound good and are reasonably priced.

I've been on the board long enough that this doesn't surprise me at all, and I appreciate the help nonetheless! I actually ended up buying groove tubes from my small locally owned fender retailer. I felt like I'd rather give my money to them than to guitar center, which had EHX and other brands. They sound okay to my ears.

GTs are great tubes, they use EH ,Sovtek, Slovak tubes, depending on the type that you got.
