Thanks Arjay !
You answered my next question, This crazy thing has two trim pots
One on the back and one under the chassis.
I tried to take a picture of the bias circuit so you guys in the know would know if it had been altered

12AT7 in V-3 tested O.K. then the neddle dropped on both halves if you hold the test button down just an extra second.

I replaced it with an excellent 6021 12AT7 and again slight improvement.

So Guess I should order some Caps huh !
F&T's instead of the Spragues this time given the troubles with them as of late.

Blues, I've had several Sprague Atoms recently fail in PS rails (almost unheard of, in the Old Days). There is a rumor spreading on other boards about some of their products. Esp HV 'lytics.

Kinda what I had heard also, I asked the guys in Arizona and they said they had no problems so......

But you can't expect that they would say even if they were, they do sell the stuff.

Those 4 10's sure pack a wallup !

+1

Go with the Fischer & Tausche electrolytics -- trust me, you'll sleep better.

F&T's it is then
I should have enough carbon comps and metal oxides to cover the Resistors I'll need.

I think I'll keep my trio of SilverFace amps for a while, I'm lov'n the sounds !!!

See all them Blue Molded caps on the board ??? That made me a happy dude.

Blues, and others. The RCA BP are the best 6L6GC. If you want a little more balls (yet you can have it) --- the pink or tan based GE 7851A is the tube. I have two matched pair left for that special amp. :)

These are the basis for the famous STR-415, FWIW...

Yeah I'm with you on the "Black-Plate" RCA's, Beemer!!! Another tube that Fender's like, is the early iteration GE's. JMO, Art

I have Motorola-branded gray-plate GE 6V6GT's in my '65 Princeton Reverb and one of my Deluxe Reverbs -- they both love those bottles.

I am prob on the minority but I have been through at least a dozen RCA black plates and have only found one pair worth heaping praise over nad they are since departed.
If you have RCA BPs that you dig then thats great. I have great tone with SR's with JJ's, TSRI 5881s, and TAD small bottles.
Keep the blue molded if they are healthy and I second the F&T for the PS caps. JJs also nice as well.

I have had great results with the Tube Amp Doc's stuff also

My favorite 6V6GT's have been a set of Motorola I found in an old organ and RCA's
as far as 6L6GC's I've tried em all I think and the little short bottle TAD's were indeed very good sounding in my TRRI I have RCA's in the Super reverb that sound great !
I have sylvanias, Phillips, Some of those Groove Tubes "GE" laying around still new in the box, The Bandmaster still has those Valve Art tubes that came with it and call me crazy but it sounds amazing so........
As Arjay is fond of saying "if it aint broke don't fix it"

I have a brand new set of RCA's NOS in the original boxes too 8)
I don't want to get crazy with tube swaps till I have a chance to swap out the filter caps on the Super Reverb, Then I'll be able to do a proper shoot out and use my DR-5 recorder to see if I can hear much difference.

a good way to do a shoot out is not to know which tubes you are listening too to avoid the conscience or sunconscience brand thing. I have done this many times by putting the tubes in a box paired up. Installing them and then checing the mA and VDC. Then proceed with the shoot out. Of course you can tell the diff with tube size but try as best as you can...

" at least a dozen RCA black plates and have only found one pair worth heaping praise over " and they are since departed. "

Good 1950-60's NOS or pulled output or rectifier tubes are very hard to come by. They need to be tested in a wokring amp, NOT in as tube tester. All kinds of ppl sell 50-60% (or less) idle dissipation tubes (in an amp) on the Net these days. And try to pass them off as high testing.

It's how RCA and Telefunken got a kinda bad rap in the last ten years. Tubes look nice and shiny, but perform lousy in working units --- yet "test" high.

I have yet to try an honest NOS or near NOS RCA black plate 6L6GC that didn't sound like it supposed to. Provided the plate voltages and idle bias were set correctly. And the tubes weren't microphonic or have hinky conduction issues.

The only 6L6GC types that have same long life & known killer tone, are the real GEC/MOV KT-66, Mullard EL37, and GE or Philips JAN 7581A. That's been my experience over the last 30+ years.

The only "new" 6L6GC type that comes close is the 1990's vintage (gold labeled, St Petersburg made) SV-6L6GC. I know several amps that I replaced the original RCA with these tubes in the 1990's & they are still being gigged today. I can't say that for any other "new" 6L6GC type.

Yes....and in my post I forgot too mention the Svet =C= 6L6GC. Great stuff all the way around. I have been hoarding them when I see good deals.
