Well I was at my local L&M and....Big Surprise! :D

I put down payments but the amps is getting serviced, when done i will have a chance to play again a make a decision. The final price was 1200. I still have a chance to back out now, so can you tell me if this is a fair price.

No black lines but a drip edge says aa165 tube chart.

Thanks.

Remstar, if you can get pics of the inside of the chassis, that would be great. Short of that I'd want to know if the rectifier tube is a GZ34(5AR4) or a 5U4GB. I would also tell the tech that you want to audition the amp biased at 26ma per power tube and at 36ma per tube. Not that these are magic numbers, but if he can do this in ten minutes, you're probably looking at the real deal. BTW the higher setting will sound fuller. This could verify the AA165 designation. Good Hunting! Art

" This could verify the AA165 designation."

What the hell?!?!?!?

The idle-bias setting has nothing to do with whether this amp is an AA165, an AB668, or an AA1069.

And to the O/P, I say again.

Post some pics before you buy.

Gear forums are full of clueless pilgrims who disregarded help when it was proferrred then ended up sucking eggs on a bogus deal because some sheister salesclerk sold them a bill of goods.

Ignore this at your peril.

Actually, what I was getting at, Arjay, was that the 165 uses the GZ34. And the 165 has the adjustable bias control. If it's a 5U4GB or the tech balks at an easy bias change, then I'd step back and ask why. And it's not the bias numbers, per se. It's whether or not the tech can quickly change the bias setting. Granted, this would only indicate it has an adjustable bias control, indicative of the 165. But I think the rectifier tube and adjustable bias, could be a tip-off. Art

Oh Man, I'm gettin' old!!! Just check the date codes on all the transformers, Remstar. That should give you enough info on the amps date. Good idea to do the same on the speakers. Apologize, sometimes I over analyze this stuff and miss the obvious!!! Art

Fair enough, Art.

But I think by consulting the appropriate schematics you'll find that the AA165 and AB668 both use the GZ34 rectifier but the AB668 has a bias-balance control. The AA1069 is bias-balanced as well but employs the 5U4GB.

For me the "red flag" regarding this specific amp dating to 1968 is the front panel without the customary black lines. There are other cosmetic cues peculiar to this model year which would reveal this example's bona fides. It's why I urged the OP to put some pics up if possible. A check of the amp's EIA codes would also be revealing.

You know Arjay, I think it's time for me to take a break for a while. I've made so many simple mistakes lately, my ability to be helpful is questionable. Besides, I've got some choice Vitamin Q tone caps that need to go into the Strat and Tele. And I need to play the geetars, way more than typing about amps!!! To say nothing about the attention I need to pay the Ricky. Remstar, just take your time and listen to solid advise!!! Art

Nonsense, Art.

We've all screwed the pooch from time to time. That's why we rely on each other to keep the truth out there and maintain focus on the issues.

But you're right -- we do need to play our guitars more.

I've yet to see a guitarist's tombstone that read "He knew every riff there was to know".

If pics are not possible, try to get a look at the trannies and note the numbers stamped on the frames. These are the EIA manufacturer's codes and will reveal who made the component and when. If the trannies are original, the digits are much more significant than even the amp's serial number since there are overlap areas between adjoining model years which can cause dating confusion.

Alright, finally got the amp home and took a good look.

Its sounds great, best tube amp Ive heard no matter the circuit.

Here are the codes I could see

Chassis: A12498

Speakers: F8-50 (both)

Codes:

0022848

606-8-49

Tranformer?

027699

606-9-22

And something like F0- with other on a black metal plate

Thanks I'm pretty sure it isn't AA165 but I really liike the sound

Hope you can help

I'd say this is a 1969, not 68 from your codes.

Chassis: A12498 = A12000 to A13300 - 1969

These usually ran Pro Reverb AA1265 or AB668 circuits. You need to peek under the hood and check the layout, to be sure. Your iron is dated:

606-8-49 = (606) -> Schumacher made, 1968, 49 week.

and

606-9-22 + (606) -> Schumacher. 1969, 22 week.

So, the amp could also have had the AA1069 (Oct 1969) circuit.
