Just scored a blackface Bandmaster (been drooling for one for years!) on the fleabay.
The next issue will be that many of the smaller gigs can only fit one of my single12"
8ohm cabinets. (This set-up worked fine for the BluesJr or the HRDeluxe heads).

I've played with mismatched ohms before but can't remember what to expect.
2 of my single 12 cabs wired parallel will be gorgeous on the bigger venues but
It would be a shame to not be able to use the Bandmaster for the smaller gigs.
I humbly ask the Fender amp gurus (you know who you are) to tell me please
what to expect & how wrong it may be.
Thanks in advance,
Vin

The Bandmaster is designed for a 4-ohm load. Using a single 8-ohm speaker presents no safety hazard to the amp but its 40-watt maximum output will be reduced to approximately 29 or 30 watts.

Thank you Retro. I was really hoping (but couldn't recall) that it would be OK.
The reduced wattage will work too for the smaller gigs.
Thanks again Retro and of course, photos forthcoming upon delivery!

Vin, glad to hear you got an amp you were lusting after!!! I'm no guru, but the only concern I would have about running 8ohms is output spikes. This ocurrs when the voice coil collapses and sends a voltage back through the output trans. The power tubes can be protected by the use of "flyback" diodes. The use of IN 4007 diodes provide protection over most frequencies, but will not alter the tone at all. The use of Fred diodes cover all frequencies, but bleed off high end(not my recommendation). I put the flyback diodes in my '67 Band Master, many years ago. Enjoy that amp!!! Art

Amp porn I promise from this weekend's gig.
Played the 65 Bandmaster last weekend &
I'm speechless! It was everything I remembered
and loved, right down to the Fender tube/wood/tolex smell!
It ran flawlessly, no ground issues (still has orig.cord) as well
as complete set of RCAs and those look original too!

I'm not a pedal guy but I've ordered a VanAmps Sole Reverb
to "chime it" every so slightly.
Arjay was right on with the reduced wattage using the single 8ohm
but it was still too loud (for the club, not the band!) so to get those
6L6 RCAs workin' I'll use the Weber MiniMass sparingly.

BTW The droolin' hasn't stopped, and most of the lead verses get a second "go around"!
I can't believe I've waited this long to get back to blackface sound!
:D :D :D

Have a modern 3-conductor grounded power cable installed as soon as possible. This mod should be considered as a mandatory safety upgrade and will in no way diminish the amp's tone or value. Save the original cord and plug of course.

Way to go, Vinny!!! Played my '67 Band Master through a 4X12 8ohm cab for years, when I first got it. Worked out just fine! The fly-back diodes are just an uptight kind of deal. Just a geezer's over-protection opinion! Have fun!!!! Art

Thanks Art but I too share the ol' geezer, overcautious feeling toward this amp.
I remember the "zap" of a microphone and hope to re-cord soon but more importantly,
Nothing, not even picks can go on the amp!
Amp stays wrapped in a blanket until the BSProtection Cover arrives.
It comes to the gig in my car, not in the Equipment truck!

...did I tell ya about the full compliment of vintage RCAs!!! LOL
Yeah, This AB circuit is my holy grail!!!

Now you know what a lot of us know -- it's nigh impossible to improve upon Leo's original designs.

Here's my Bandmaster "utility rig"......

Image

The head dates to 1966 ("PD" date stamp) and the cab is a home-made Showman enclosure stuffed with a pair of Celestion V30's. It's loud, it's punchy, it gets the job done.

Talk about amp porn... :D  :D

There's this great photo of a Twin Reverb in the dark, with it's bulbs glowing radiant orange. Awesome shot! Goona Google it. Gives one goose bumps, just imagining the scene. No?

I need a vacation.

We've got built-in porn sites right here!
Everytime Arjay, Art, and a few others post
their pictures, I would simply sigh & trip back
to my younger days of stacked SRs.
To me, there's just something about a
vintage Fender, either well kept, road worn or
even re-cab'd that "youze guys" reminded
me I was missing.
I have been very happy (& fortunate) with
the HRDeluxe & BluesJr. but after 7 trouble free
years w/ the Deluxe, it's now at the shop.
And it was "the amp porn" from this very site
that the decision was made to stop droolin' &
just do it.
I am now again part of that red/orange pilot light
group.
'Ya gotta love it!
