Back in the late '60's me and my pals tried to figure out why the Bandmaster and Bassman speaker cabinets got so big so suddenly. Was it so they'd sound better in some way, or was it so (as we suspected) they'd look cooler?

The larger cabs yielded significantly better bass response (they also both received baffle ports when the enclosure's size was increased, which the original small-box models did not have) and the added internal volume made them a bit louder as well. However, the enlarged dimensions were really overkill from a technical standpoint. OTOH, the marketing guys viewed it as a plus.

Arjay, An old tech told me it was Marshall that spurred the "bigger-is-better (or bigger  )" era. Have you ever tried a Hiwatt head/stack setup? Holy cow! DR103 on a full stack is lethal. Damn, they just don't make them like that anymore. :(

I once owned a '73 Marshall 100-watt Plexi head and a pair of Sunn 412S cabs.

I know all about the sonic capabilities of a full stack.
